Every five years, the World Zionist Congress election gives American Jews a powerful opportunity to shape Israel’s future and impact world Jewry. This election determines leadership, policies, and the allocation of over $1 billion annually for Jewish education,
aliyah, security, and more.

At this pivotal time, Shomrei Torah has partnered with OU, YU, Touro, RCA, Bnai Akiva and many other institutions to encourage a vote for OIC-Mizrachi (Slate 5). This is a vote that will:

🔥 Strengthen our soldiers and their families who sacrifice daily for our homeland.

đź“– Support Torah learning in yeshivot, midrashot, and Jewish schools worldwide.

🛡 Defend and rebuild Israeli communities devastated by terror and war.

✡ Unite the Jewish people and stand strong against rising antisemitism.

🌍 Ensure Jewish leadership remains rooted in Torah values and Zionist commitment.

Your vote ensures that Torat Yisrael, Am Yisrael, and Eretz Yisrael remain at the forefront of

Zionist leadership.

Dear Friends,

This year, Purim falls on a Friday, presenting a fascinating halachic discussion about when to hold the Purim Seudah while also properly preparing for Shabbat. There are two primary customs regarding the timing of the meal, each with its own advantages and halachic basis.

One approach is to have the Purim seudah/meal in the morning, ensuring that one will be hungry for the Friday night Shabbat meal. This is based on the idea that a Purim meal should be a significant event, but not at the expense of the honor of Shabbat. By eating earlier in the day (before midday at 1:05pm), one can fully celebrate Purim while arriving at the Shabbat table with an appetite, as emphasized by many halachic authorities.

The second approach, followed by several early Rishonim, including the Meiri, is to begin the Purim meal later in the afternoon and allow it to flow into Shabbat. At a certain point, the meal is paused for Kiddush, after which it resumes as the Shabbat Seudah. This custom is known as Poreis Mapa U'Mekadesh, as described in the Gemara. The advantage of this practice is that it allows for a full and joyous Purim meal at the proper time, after one has already completed the other Purim mitzvot and Shabbat preparations. Additionally, it seamlessly transitions from the simcha of Purim into the kedusha of Shabbat albeit with many unique halachic details.

Given these considerations, we are excited to host a communal Purim Seudah that will continue into Shabbat. This will be a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Poreis Mapa U'Mekadesh together as a community, in a spirited and halachically guided manner.

We will begin the Seudah on Friday afternoon and transition into Shabbat together. To ensure everything runs smoothly, I put together a checklist (please read below) and order of the meal so that we are all on the same page. There will be guidance on when and how we will pause for davening, Kiddush, and the transition into Shabbat.

This promises to be a memorable, uplifting, and joyful way to celebrate both Purim and Shabbat, and I strongly encourage you to join us for this special experience.

You can sign up for the Seudah at https://www.shomrei-torah.org/event/purimintoshabbat

Looking forward to celebrating together!

Warmly,

Rabbi Markowitz
