Epiphany Gallery at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church

Epiphany Gallery at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." Thomas Merton Words alone are not enough to fully express spirituality.

The Epiphany Gallery invites evidence of what is seen when we open ourselves to let God's light shine through us to reveal Him. The Epiphany Gallery will support the ministry of Mount Calvary, her people and her worship; inviting open interpretations and wide expressions of God's Story.

We welcome Jason Folkerts to Epiphany Gallery! On exhibit is Arboreous Fides, a visual connection of trees and faith. Please stop by and see this artist's wonderful way of bringing scripture to his canvas!

"I drew inspiration and a name from this connection, of a tree and one’s personal faith (from the Latin Arboreous Fides). I painted five tableaus: Roots, Trunk, Branches, Leaves, and Fruit. Each is a vital part of the tree, separate, yet connected. Each plays a significant role in the life of a healthy tree. So, it is with our faith journey – what are our roots, trunk, branches, leaves, and fruit as it relates to the world around us and in us? For me the roots, often unseen, represented the foundation of my faith, grounding me, going deep and seeking nutrients to mature me. The trunk represented my visible beliefs and expression of a faith at work and growing. The branches symbolize that it is not a solo journey but one that is connected to many through community and diversity. The leaves are an expression of my talents and gifts, blossoming with each new season. Finally – fruit, the legacy of one’s faith, to produce something good and meaningful beyond oneself – to give back to the world around you." Jason Folkerts

Epiphany Gallery is delighted to share The Cathedral Project by artist Dominique Winders! Each piece is layered with craftsmanship, artistry, history, heritage, spirituality, and creativity! We invite you to come spend time taking in every detail! It is a very unique and special exhibit!

Dominque Winders was introduced to high gothic architecture as a child. The work featured in the Gallery is a continuation of "The Cathedral Project" series which combines Dominique's French heritage with her Midwestern roots in which she explores the spiritual realm of art using mixed media, collage and acrylic on rustic tin barn shingles. The work integrates historic facades, caryatids, icons, and metal embellishments to create a dreamy homage to the persistence of man-made wonders intended to invoke spiritual reflection.

Epiphany Gallery is proud to add visual voice to the spirit of Pride Month with a very special exhibit from Cassandra Morgan! The Gallery keepers have been witness to Cassandra's opening in new ways as an artist and it is divine! This series started with some questions, some really good questions, and led to a rich, artistic exploration. Cassandra calls the collection, "I Am." She isn't finished yet, Cassandra has a few more pieces in her head and heart which we will see as the ideas blossom!

"God is so much more than gender or skin color. We place our man-made labels and boxes into society to create division, separation, and otherness. My goal for these works is to open our own eyes and hearts to the similarities we all share. This collection allows you to question what you have always thought God to look like, sound like, or feel like. There is great blessing in questioning and wondering!" Cassandra Morgan

Look what landed in the Epiphany Gallery! A most wondrous collection of birds are perched on our wall! Artist Kari Maxwell is working on this series (birds are a new subject to her) and is so gracious to share them with us as she begins this "unexpected" adventure with birds! Our Lenten theme is "Unexpected," and we delight in the unexpected places creativity and exploration bring to our artists and our viewers. Although Kari's work is full of color and light, it is a path of unknown territory and trust in process. We hope you can find inspiration and reflection in her work.

Hello Creative Friends!
The first prompt came to me (Anne) as we were on a road trip! Not sure if I was yearning to be back home or just letting my mind wander as I watched the road ahead!

We're going to reflect on all of the streets we've lived on and write down the names. We'll then work with imagery to make a picture or collage using images that come to mind from the street names where we've lived. Just for fun, random creativity!

As you think of the places you've lived, think of how God leads you and guides you home. Even if home isn't a building:)

Our second prompt: The Minimalist... ...the line, the scribble, simplicity. I (Andrea) was at the eye doctor and in the lobby area is a piece of art I continue to be drawn towards. It’s a nature scene—mountains, stream, trees, clouds - in color, but basically done with lines - truthfully, it was artfully scribbled. I love it. So, let’s use our drawing skills: “Drawing is the art of taking a line for a walk” - Paul Klee Let’s let go of all that “art” stuff in our heads, the things that worry us in our art work - go simple. Pull out crayons or colored pencils and take a line for a walk.

Have a wonderful week!

Hello Artists!
One of this week's prompt is about boldness, and color, and dreams! Using the work of Alma Thomas as inspiration, we will be bold with marks and color! See the prompt page for examples of her work.

Our second prompt urges us to flip things upside down... or maybe it is now right side up! This prompt pushes us to look past what we think our art is by turning it upside down and seeing it from a new perspective. What is altered by a simple shift in perspective?

Teddy Roosevelt counseled, “Do what you can, where you are, with what you have!” The time is not often exactly right, we seldom have all we think we need to get started but trust in his advice, you’ll get there!

And Henry David Thoreau stated with certainty, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams!" It's not too late, it's not too big or too little, and it would be a darn shame if we skipped the chance to follow God's nudges and our heart's calling!

Have fun, be bold, and don't forget to try a new perspective!

Hello creators and artists! This week we are taking a little pause for some zentangle fun! Have you ever walked into your messy house and looked around, not knowing where to start? Me too... I have learned that you just have to start. There is no right way, just start. This week's prompt is all about filling up a blank page, one that may stare glaringly at you with its emptiness. Our prompt is to start with one line, draw dots on that line, and then connect the dots! Simple, easy, but takes time, patience, letting go and sticking with it, all at the same time! Check out the prompt for more info!

Have fun and stay with it!

Hello Friends!
We are working with fruit and still life this week.

The idea comes from Mount Calvary's summer worship series based on the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Working with the classic still life idea of arranging a composition, then making your impression of it on canvas or paper, we will use the beautiful summer fruit we have in abundance right now. Use paint, pencil, markers, crayons, collage, photography, any medium you want. Arrange your still life, add any other elements that appeal to you or just work with fruit and make your art. Add words from the idea of fruits of the spirit if you'd like.

Enjoy these last bites of summer!

Good morning!
While watching kids at camp this summer, I found myself constantly amazed by the gems that chose to sit with the one kid left alone. I watched the kids notice and then act on their need to help people feel welcome and included. I started pondering what creates the perfect match in friends, relationships... art.... the world. I hope you enjoy this week's prompt creating a pair of art pieces that work together to tell a story, but could also be standalone works of art. Each relationship we encounter in life should work separately or together, right? Not always that easy!

Have fun playing this week!
Anne, Andrea and Cassandra
