If the Eucharist were only a meal, then Calvary would be no more than an ex*****on. It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of Jesus’ Eucharistic action. The words of institution — This is my body . . . my blood” — are a performative enactment of Christ’s saving action.

With the words of consecration, Jesus initiated his own self-sacrificial offering. That same sacrifice was consummated on the cross at Calvary. Jesus’ priestly words and actions at the Last Supper were what transformed his crucifixion at Calvary from an ex*****on into a sacrifice. The Paschal Mystery, moreover, brought the ancient observances to fulfillment.
