Some meals simply put dinner on the table.

Others seem designed to make the table larger.

We are beginning The Christian Table with Sunday gravy: a deep, slow-simmered tomato sauce filled with homemade meatballs and Italian sausage. It is hearty, generous, freezer-friendly, and capable of feeding approximately ten people before the bread and salad even arrive.

The ingredients are not rare or extravagant. Tomatoes, onions, garlic, herbs, ground beef, sausage, breadcrumbs, eggs, and Parmesan become something magnificent through attention and time.

That is part of what we hope to recover through this series.

Hospitality does not always require an elaborate event. Sometimes it begins by placing a larger pot on the stove.

Make enough for the children and grandparents. Make enough to invite a neighbor. Freeze enough to help a family after a birth, illness, or exhausting week. Prepare for generosity before the need announces itself.

This week’s recipe comes from My Sequined Life, where it is called Sunday Sauce with Meatballs and Sausage. The sauce begins with onions, garlic, crushed tomatoes, oregano, and basil. The meatballs and sausage are baked—making a large batch far easier to manage—and then finish in the pot while the sauce slowly thickens.

The recipe takes time, but relatively little of that time requires active work. Serve it over pasta with grated Parmesan and fresh basil, then add crusty bread and a simple salad.

And call everyone to the table.

A FULL POT.
A LONG TABLE.
AN OPEN DOOR.

MAKE SOMETHING GOOD.
MAKE ENOUGH TO SHARE.
MAKE ROOM FOR ONE MORE.

Happy Labor Day!

Work was not invented by the Fall.

Adam was given a garden to tend before there were thorns, sweat, frustration, decay, or futility.

The curse made labor painful. It did not make labor meaningless.

And Christians do not work as though the curse has the final word.

At the cross, sin was judged, the curse was borne, the powers were disarmed, and the veil was torn. At the resurrection, death lost its claim to final victory.

The war is not yet over. Death remains. Thorns remain. Disorder remains.

But we work behind a victorious King.

That changes the way we think about vocation.

A doctor fights disease.
A farmer fights barrenness.
A teacher fights ignorance.
A carpenter fights decay.
A mechanic restores what has broken.
A mother makes a home fruitful and habitable.
A father builds, guards, teaches, and provides.
A pastor tends Christ’s flock.
A king defends his people and submits what he stewards to its rightful King.

Every faithful vocation takes some little corner of disorder and makes it more ordered.

Not to earn Christ’s victory.

Because His victory has already begun.

And our work is not merely about finding the career that fulfills us.

A better question is:

What has God placed in my hands that can become useful to someone else?

Work feeds, repairs, teaches, protects, beautifies, heals, governs, serves, and builds.

Vocation is love made useful.

So this Labor Day:

WORK THE GARDEN.
FIGHT THE THORNS.
LEAVE SOMETHING BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT.

Because Christ has already won the war against the curse, our little acts of cultivation are not meaningless.

Enjoy your rest day and come back tomorrow with a renewed zeal to work for His glory and the expansion of Christ's kingdom.

In 1325, Bologna and Modena went to war.

Contrary to the legend, they didn’t actually go to war over a bucket. The bucket came later—which is somehow even funnier.

But behind the joke was something much less funny: two neighboring peoples who had spent generations accumulating grievances until they scarcely needed another reason to fight.

Christians can do the same thing.

Churches can. Families can. Nations can.

And sometimes the disagreement really does matter. Truth matters. There are arguments worth having and convictions worth defending.

But “you are wrong” and “you are my enemy” are not the same sentence.

And sometimes even an important fight has to wait because a bigger one has arrived.

The world. The flesh. The devil. Apostasy. The erosion of Christian faith and civilization.

There is a time to argue with your brother.

There is also a time to stand beside him.

Know your brother.
Know your enemy.
Know which fight comes first.

You can sort out the bucket later.

“If you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.”
— Galatians 5:15

What we make reveals what we love.

Art does not emerge from nowhere. The images a people creates—and the images it repeatedly places before its eyes—reveal what it honors, fears, remembers, mocks, and worships.

But the movement runs in both directions.

Yesterday’s loves become today’s art, and today’s art helps teach tomorrow’s loves. What flows from the heart can return to form the heart.

That is why Christians should learn to see carefully.

In MADE VISIBLE: Art, Beauty & the Christian Imagination, we will look closely at real works of art, recover the meanings of inherited symbols, and ask what they reveal about the people who made them—and the world they believed themselves to inhabit.

This is not nostalgia. Art cannot regenerate a dead heart; the Holy Spirit gives life. But the images, stories, songs, buildings, and habits surrounding us can teach living hearts what to recognize, honor, and love.

So we will train the eye, train the heart, and train the hand.

We will receive the inheritance, discern what is good, and learn to make something worth handing down for the cultivation of our posterity.

This month, we are praying for Phillip and Ashley Irwin, International Mission Board missionaries serving in Osaka, Japan.

Osaka is a city of millions—famous for its energy, hospitality, commerce, and food. Yet across Japan, evangelical Christians remain well under one percent of the population, and many people have never heard the Gospel clearly from a Christian they know and trust.

That is why the Irwins’ patient, relationship-centered ministry matters. In partnership with Japanese churches, they host language exchanges, video-game gatherings, and other events that create space for friendship and honest Gospel conversations. They also serve university students and help lead short-term mission teams throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

As you read through these slides, take time to learn about Japan’s long and often painful Christian history, the challenges facing missionaries and Japanese believers today, and the specific ways we can pray.

Through the Cooperative Program, our church shares in supporting missionaries like Phillip and Ashley. Pray that God would open hearts in Osaka, strengthen His Church throughout Japan, and give the Irwins endurance, wisdom, and joy as they make Christ known.
