Here is another episode of Truths: Jewish Wisdom for Today. This week, in the "Torah Portion Uncensored" section of the podcast, I dove into some really challenging laws from Parshat Ki Tetze that might seem quite jarring to our modern minds. I focused on two main ideas: the laws around slander in marriage and the grounds for divorce.
We looked at how the Torah outlines what happens when a man falsely accuses his wife of not being a virgin and the consequences that follow. According to the Torah, if a man slanders his wife, he must stay married to her for life as a punishment—seemingly leaving the woman trapped. But, as I discuss in the episode, the rabbis of the Talmud reinterpreted this to make the law more fair. They allow for the possibility of divorce if the woman chooses, making it clear that she’s not stuck in a relationship where her husband defames her.
The conversation then turned to the grounds for divorce in Jewish law. We explored how the rabbis took a verse that appears to restrict divorce only to cases of moral failure and expanded it to include broader reasons, such as irreconcilable differences—even something as small as burning dinner!
This episode is a real exploration of how the rabbis used their wisdom to adapt Torah laws in ways that align with fairness and peace. Give it a listen and let me know what you think!
