This morning we took a bus tour of the City of Barcelona. What magnificent sights! Barcelona hosted the World's Fair in 1882 & 1929, and the Summer Olympics in 1992. We drove past the National Palace which is now an art museum, the Olympic Stadium, and stopped to view the Economic Port and take in the view. We continued on to the Park of the Citadelle, the Arc de Triomf, and the City Center.
The Sagrada Familia is a truly stunning work of art, designed by famed architect Antoni Gaudi. He took over the project in 1883. The structure has three facades, The Nativity, The Passion, and The Glory which is still not completed. Gaudi's design calls for 18 spires. Twelve to represent the apostles, four for the evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus. To date 14 are completed. The Sangrada was named a Bascilica in 2010. It is open for mass on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
Gaudi tragically died in 1926, but his work continues. In 2025, The Sagrada Familia became the world's largest church after the central tower was lifted into place.
