Arlene Margaret (Schauss) Hartman, age 89, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 1:22 a.m., with her daughter by her side, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, family, devotion, and joyful spirit.
Arlene was born June 13, 1936, to the late Edward and Emma (Holzapfel) Schauss. Arlene was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Darmstadt. She left behind a life of farming where her days were shaped by the land she loved and the values it instilled-dedication, resilience, and pride in honest work. She also spent part of her working life at the Ideal Pure Milk Company, where she was known for her reliability and strong work ethic.
She had a deep love for travel, especially her cherished trips to Florida, where she enjoyed warmer days and a change of scenery, and Branson, MO where she enjoyed many shows and dinners. Arlene was also an enthusiastic polka dancer, always finding happiness in music, movement, and the company of others. Arlene was a member of Armstrong Recreation Center. In her free time, she enjoyed quilting and crocheting. The color “red” held a special place in her heart, inspired by the tractors that symbolized both her farming life and her bold, spirited personality.
In addition to her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 40 years, Harold W. Hartman; by her sons, Curtis Hartman and infant Donald Hartman; daughter, Carol (Hartman) Bittner; and son, Quinton Hartman.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Hartman) Sensmeier, married to John, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her memory, strength, and love.
Arlene will be remembered for her warmth, her determination, and the joy she found in life’s simple pleasures. Her presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Private services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church Darmstadt, followed by burial at the church cemetery.
Thank you to North River Health Campus and a big thank you to Deaconess Hospice for their compassionate care of Arlene.
