UU Prison Ministry of Illinois Our Mission
We equip Unitarian Universalists in Illinois to ​transform institutions and support people harmed by the prison industrial complex.

The UU Prison Ministry Initiative will foster connections between UU congregations and Illinois prisoners. We will engage congregations in education about mass incarceration and provide advocacy opportunities to take action in support of human rights, reduced incarceration, and removing barriers to successful community reentry. We hope to strengthen understanding of mass incarceration, the foster

care to prison pipeline and school to prison pipeline, barriers to successful community reentry, and the role of racial injustice in mass incarceration. We hope to launch the Prison Ministry after the planning year, in July, 2016. Goals: The three main goals of this ministry are: (1) To build welcoming congregations open to sharing fellowship and resources with people coming home from incarceration. (2) To work side by side with those affected by mass incarceration to win policy change, reducing incarceration and building restorative justice policy and practice. We will work with Community Renewal Society and Unitarian Universalist Advocacy Network of Illinois. (3) To create a UU ministry presence in two Illinois prisons (one men’s and one women’s) with a part-time minister, beginning in July 2016.

✅One cop used the Flock database 717 times to track his estranged wife.
✅Another cop conducted 192 searches to track a former partner, texting her details about what she was wearing.
✅A detective ran 47 searches to track her husband’s ex-wife.
✅152 ICE and CBP agents have been accused, arrested, charged, or convicted in connection with violence including abduction and sexual assault of a child, possessing child sexual abuse materials, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, and strangulation.

We're looking for a mission-driven leader to guide the Unitarian Universalist Prison Ministry of Illinois through this next growth journey — someone who shares our commitment to a ministry of accompaniment, not charity, and sees incarcerated people as partners and co-creators in this work towards collective liberation.
✅ Part-time (25 hrs/week), hybrid role based in Illinois, start Nov. 2026 with starting salary range Salary range starting $33,000-43,000 depending on tax status, benefit configuration
and experience
✅ 10% Salary for Professional expenses and stipends for health insurance and retirement provided
✅ Leadership experience required
✅ Fundraising & collaborative staff/volunteer supervision experience
✅ Bonus: background in UU, prison ministry, or transformative justice
