Lula B. Sherman UMC

Lula B. Sherman UMC According to oral histories, there were at least two attempts to form a Methodist Episcopal church for “Negroes” in Evanston. Redmond, Sr. Lang. Lula B.

The first attempt was made in 1901 by J.B. A second attempt was made in 1921 through Laura B. Though both efforts may have been short-lived, at least 35 members were meeting regularly by 1922. The group met at the home of Mrs. Sherman at 1730 Dodge Avenue. In these early years, the group had met in a structure at Emerson and Dewey c1928, the Emerson Street YMCA c1933 and then at 2004 Emerson Stree

t c1935. At that time, the group had to disband and later reorganized into what became Sherman Methodist Church, named after Mrs. Sherman and incorporated as such on December 16, 1940. During the early 1960s, Sherman purchased a new building at 1044 Elmwood Avenue and later changed its name to Sherman United Methodist Church throughout its decades of growth. In 2002, the property located at 2214 Ridge Avenue was transferred to Sherman by the Northern Illinois Annual Conference. Historically, Sherman United Methodist Church is known as the only African American United Methodist congregation on the North Shore.

This Sunday, we're celebrating Juliet Chirowa as she steps into her next season, and she's leaving us with a powerful word to carry forward: Living in the Fellowship with the Trinity. A reminder that though seasons change, our communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit never does.

Come worship. Come celebrate. Come show up for her the way she's shown up for us. We're grateful for every seed sown. See you in the sanctuary!

Anniversaries aren't just about the past, they're a declaration that we're still here, still together, still chosen.

This Sunday, we're celebrating you. We're celebrating us. We're celebrating the sacred gift of humanity.

Look again.
That woman in the pew is carrying prayers, pain, and power.

She prays before sunrise. She stands when she is tired. She loves when it costs her everything.

She is God’s image. She is worthy of honor.

What do you do when life doesn't go
according to plan? You don't have to have it all figured
out. This Sunday, we welcome our guest preacher,
Sandra Sony, as she brings a word to encourage and
ground us in the message "Trusting God in the
Unknown."

When the path ahead is unclear, faith becomes our
anchor. Come expecting a word that will meet you right
where you are.
