Truth – Our Key to Salvation and Freedom
By Pastor Doug

Have you ever wondered why a person with problems can hear the gospel many times over and not get saved or be changed? They hear exactly what they need but it’s like water off a duck’s back. Then another person, with the same problems can hear the gospel once or twice and get saved and their life begins to change. What is the difference between them? I believe the person who gets saved or changed is a person who has a hunger for the truth and the other person is not.

Truth contains power. The gospel is truth and it contains the power to change any person’s life and make any person free. But if that truth is not wanted, it is powerless.

In my experience as a pastor, I have met many people who say they love Jesus, but their life never changes. How is that possible? In John 8 we are told about some Jews who believed Jesus and I’m sure Jesus was pleased about that. That is certainly better than hating and plotting to kill Him. However, Jesus wasn’t satisfied with them just believing Him. He wanted them to do more, He wanted them to get to know Him intimately.

Jesus said “… to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”” (John 8:31-32)

Jesus wants us to believe in Him, but He also wants us to learn what He has to say. What He has to say is important because it is truth. His word is truth, but not just a truth, but ‘the truth.’ It is absolute truth from God, and the promise is if we know God’s truth it will make us free.

The word ‘know’ is about intimacy and closeness. Knowing the truth will keep us on the right track. Proverbs 14:12 says “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” How can you know the difference between what seems right and what is right? By getting close to Jesus by reading His word and then doing what He says. If you do that, He will give you the ability to recognize when you are missing it.

It is vital to understand that Jesus came to not only be our Savior but to be our Shepherd. He is the great Shepherd and we are His sheep. One day Jesus spoke to some religious people telling them, “… you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep,” as I said to you. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:26-27)

Pursuing truth is not an option. Some people think pursuing religion is enough. It is not. We are to pursue and follow Jesus just like sheep follow their shepherd. Does that describe you. Maybe you have been wandering too far from the flock, too far from the Word. If so it’s time to turn back and feed on His word and the promise is, you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.

Turning The Tables

“Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it, saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of thieves.” Luke 19:45-46 NKJV

It is interesting how the same King who earlier had humbled Himself and rode a donkey through multitudes of excited people who were shouting “Hosanna, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” is the same King who went into the Temple with a whip and overturned the tables of the money changers. Many people are only interested in the gentle Jesus. They want the Jesus who comforts and forgives and not the Jesus who confronts and disrupts and does house cleaning. The truth is we need Him to do both.

Every physical house needs to be cleaned regularly. Dishes and clothes need washed. Floors need mopped and vacuumed. What about our spiritual house? In 1 Corinthians 6:19 the apostle Paul questions his readers saying “… do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” Then emphatically he says in verse 20 “… you were bought at a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Both the people and the Temple that Jesus disrupted belonged to God, giving Him the right to do what He did. Jesus also has the right to disrupt our lives when we need it. Sometimes disruption is exactly what we need to get us on track.

One of my dearest friends had to have that kind of disruption in his life to get his life back on track. He had given his life to the Lord for the first time while in prison. After getting out he fell back into addiction again. His addiction and other failures forced the law to send him back to prison again. Thankfully it was that upheaval that got his life straightened out. Now he is an effective pastor, leading people to the same Jesus that saved and changed his life.

Hebrews 12:6 says “… the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastens everyone He accepts as his son.” (NIV) Don’t think that Jesus doesn’t love you enough to chasten you. Chastening is not His first option. He would much rather speak to us with His word, and nudge and help us with the Holy Spirit. Denying Him these things could force Him to lovingly, turn over some tables.

This could be a good time to ask ourselves some questions. Do I tolerate things in my life that He wants me to remove? Is my spiritual life hollow or holy? What do I consider more valuable, material things or spiritual? Is my heart consumed with God’s word and prayer or the things of the world? Do I trust Him enough to ask for help? And lastly. Do I want Him to Shepherd me through the change I need or would I rather Him break me?

Avoiding Deadly Obsessions
By Pastor Doug Cox

As a young boy one of my favorite TV shows was Daniel Boone. I loved trying to emulate his life by stalking imaginary Indians, and hunting our property with my bb gun. I also set muskrat traps along the creek that skirted our land. I was hoping to sell their fur so I could buy candy. I was always disappointed by empty traps, obviously I didn’t have very good trap setting skills.

I could imagine a muskrat swimming up to my traps, recognizing the danger and then swimming away. As Christians we should be as skilled because setting traps is something the devil is very good at and any one of us can get caught in one if we are not careful. Today we will look at two common traps to avoid, the traps of envy and strife.

The Apostle James writes about these deadly twins saying, “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” (James 3:14-16 NKJV) These verses should be eye-opening to all of us. How bitter envy and self-seeking have their source in demonic wisdom and that these attitudes and emotions can open the door to confusion and every evil thing.

Bitter envy come from a Greek word ‘zelos’ that implies a fierce desire to promote one’s own ideas and convictions to the exclusion of everyone else. It describes a person being so fixated, obsessed and fanatical about his own cause that others perceive him as an extremist or militant. This person becomes so preoccupied, obsessed and gripped with his own view of things that he won’t hear or consider the view of others. James says if this describes you don’t lie against the truth.

Self-seeking is translated strife in the KJV and comes from the Greek word ‘eritheia.’ Ancient Greeks used it to describe a political party. The party is formed by agreeing on certain ideas and agenda. These parties were/are willing to fight fiercely to be in control and call the shots and can be so blinded by their platform of ideas that they have no tolerance for anyone who sees things differently. The result is it opens the door for “confusion and every evil thing” to operate.

Confusion comes from the Greek word ‘akatastasia’ and describes civil disobedience, disorder and anarchy in any organization. Confusion in our lives puts a smile on the devil’s face because he knows anarchy can lead to the destruction of relationships, marriages, families, churches and the list goes on.

The word evil is interesting and comes from the Greek word ‘phaulos.’ It describes something very terrible and foul. Thinking back to my elementary days of playing Daniel Boone. If I had found a dead rabbit crawling with maggots, I would never have slung it over my shoulder and carried it home as a trophy. But that’s what happens when people let their bitter envy and self-seeking dominate to the end. They might win a battle, but it stinks in the end.

Prayer – Lord please give us discernment to swim away from the demonic whispers of demonic wisdom. Help us not be caught by deadly obsessions. Keep us from being trapped by bitterness, envy, strife and self-seeking. Help us operate in what James calls “wisdom from above.” He writes, “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” (James 3:17 NKJV)

Our Options Concerning Fear
By Pastor Doug Cox

Walking down County Road at night is much different today than it was during the early 1960’s. Back then the streetlights were sparse, leaving shadowy, very dark grays in between where the light would lose its reach, especially on moonless nights. The two lane road was also lined with fifty-gallon barrels with the tops cut out being used as trash cans. It wasn’t unusual for a cat to jump out when passing by, but the most ominous thing for me in my early adolescence was, these cans were perfectly sized for a ‘monster’ to hide behind.

I remember times when I headed home after dark from my cousin’s house that I would let my imagination force me into an all out run for home, being afraid of that very thing. I remember tasting blood from my burning lungs as I ran into our driveway. Fear had gripped me.

Sometimes our fears are contrived. As a young boy I watched ‘The Blob’ and other scary movies on Frightmare which fed my imaginations and fears. I also came up with scary stories of my own and used them to scare my younger sisters. I thought it was funny to see them afraid but a different story when fear was chasing me.

There are times when fear is legitimate, like for the people who lived in the region of the Demoniac. One day Jesus and His disciples took a boat ride into the area of the Gadarenes. And “… when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit”. (Mark 5:2 NKJV)

This tomb dweller had been terrorizing the neighboring community and was supernaturally strong. The disturbed people tried chaining him, but their shackles wouldn’t hold. He would howl like an animal and cut himself with sharp stones. He was one legitimate scary dude, who was not of right mind and demonized. What do you do with someone like that? Thankfully Jesus knew and came to do something about it. He fearlessly set the man free and put him in his right mind.

Dealing with fear is part of our human experience and one doesn’t have to look very far to see things that can cause fear. However, it is important that Christians understand that our fears are not meant to dominate us. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy saying, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV)

When I was young, I played in the playground of fear. It was exciting to be scared by movies and scare others. I didn’t realize though, that when I was running down the shadowy road on a dark night, it was a spirit of fear that was pushing me. A spirit of fear I had opened the door too. The devil uses fear. Playing with it can give an entrance for the spirit of fear to take control. The spirit of fear is not from God and we need to resist it with a knowledge of God’s love, power and a sound mind.

The Bible tells us the future options concerning fear. One is that “men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” (Luke 21:26 NKJV) The other is Psalm 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me, Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (NKJV)

Discerning the Times
By Pastor Doug Cox

I have a coat stuffed away that I jokingly refer to as ‘my friend’ because it’s so big and fluffy that it takes up the room of another person. I use it when temperatures plummet below zero for days and winds howl, blowing snow snakes across frozen roads. This year I haven’t even thought about it because the weather patterns and seasons are all so mixed up. This wacky weather is making me wonder what is going on.

Jesus talked about the weather and seasons. One day some jealous rebellious men called Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Him and asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. “He answered and said to them, when it is evening you say, it will be fair weather, for the sky is red and, in the morning, it will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening. Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And He left them and departed.” (Matthew 16:2-4 NKJV)

Prior to this confrontation Jesus had been busy healing the sick, opening blind eyes and deaf ears. He had delivered tormented souls from the power of demons and raised the dead. The Pharisees and Sadducees were well aware of these miracles but instead of considering these supernatural works as His authentication as God’s chosen Messiah, they wanted Him to perform a sign for them. Instead of doing that Jesus accused them of being spiritually blind.

So, besides all the miracles Jesus did, His final sign for us all was the sign of Jonah. Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, similarly, Jesus, the Son of Man spent three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, then rose again. Romans 1:4 declares Jesus “… to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.” There is no better sign than that as evidence that Jesus is the Messiah.

Holy Scripture tells us He’s coming back. It tells about what that will happen just before He returns. There will be natural signs. “… there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” (Luke 21:11 NKJV) In Matthew 24 Jesus warns of great deception and false Christs. He warns of wars and rumors of wars and about nation against nation. He warns of antisemitism and hatred and how love will grow cold and lawlessness will increase. He says these signs will appear like birth pains in a pregnant woman, happening right before He returns. Also preceding His return will be the Great Tribulation.

The Apostle Paul says, in the last days perilous times will come. Men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, proud and blasphemous. They will be unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers without self-control. They will be brutal, despisers of good, traitors and headstrong. They will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God and will have a form of godliness but denying His power. (See 2 Timothy 3:1-5)

I’m wondering if our different weather patterns should prompt us to look honestly at the state of our world and ask the Lord to help us discern the times so we can be ready for His return.
