On the 31st, our Rev. Dr. Woolf spoke about miracles and how we can go about appreciating them more. Dr. Woolf referenced the story of Honi the circle drawer, and how he never stepped out of his circle until God gave him the rain he wanted. While Honi’s story can be seen as one trying to bend God’s will to one’s own, it is really a story of perseverance. How he stayed in that circle boldly expecting something great to happen, refusing to let expectations bind him. That is why his story is so important, because we all need circles where we can stand by our values and not leave until the world emulates mercy, love, and truth. This can only be possible if we hold on to our capacity for awe, because it makes us appreciate what we have and what we’re capable in our lives.

We make miracles together! This morning we discovered that our baptismal, which we had pre-filled for today’s baptism, had drained during the night. It takes about 5 hours to fill, and we had one hour before service. So our youth and other church members and staff grabbed buckets and got to work. In addition to everyone you see scurrying by in this time lapse video Jack McHugh took, there were people filling buckets and pots and bowls and mopping up the spills. It’s not quite loaves and fishes, but it shows what we can do as a community.

As part of their Adventure Week activities, our senior youth will be visiting Brave Space Alliance to learn more about their work and help with their food pantry. BSA is an LGBTQ+ focused community center on Chicago's South Side that welcomes and serves all who come through their doors. Please bring donations to the church on Sunday, May 31 and June 7. Our youth will deliver the donations during their visit. There is a high need for gluten-free items in particular.

This Sunday, our Rev. Dr. Woolf referenced the stories of the Tower of Babel and the Pentecost. How God saw humanities pride with the creation if the tower, and the love that came from Holy Spirit during the Pentecost. How today, we are a people of Babel. Through all of the hate that has been accepted by so many, we have become people of Babel. However, we have the chance to become Pentecost people. A people that use their faith to build bridges of love and mercy. These bridges are built through the little things we do everyday, because God knows that we are meant to come together. To come together and build the arc before the flood, because if we want to change the world, we have to change our hearts.

This Sunday, Rev. Dr. Woolf spoke about why we build houses for God. It is difficult to understand because the relationship between God and temple is more complex than what it seems to be. Especially when we know that God is everywhere, and isn’t only going to be found at these places we build for God. In reality, these places of worship bring us together, because as long as love is there, and people are committed to the cause, there is community. And there is no other place with as much love and commitment as a place of worship. As long as we do not simplify God to the point where we believe we can only see God on Sunday’s, we will begin to understand God more clearly. Because once God is put in a box like that, we are unable to think fully about the capacious love God brings. Ultimately, Church isn’t for God, but for us to build something beautiful.

Last Sunday, we celebrated some of our youth and their faith journey so far. Those who chose to get baptized or chose not to, had their faith statements read aloud by their mentors during service. Each statement describing their individual experience and ideas surrounding faith, the Holy Spirit, and God. We thank the mentors who helped guide them through this, and we will keep supporting the youth in their ongoing journeys with God.
