WGN was at the Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University this past Sunday for a cover story highlighting the growth we’ve been experiencing — but behind every number is a name, a story, a student, searching for meaning, belonging, truth, and ultimately for Jesus.
What has moved me most is not simply that more people are showing up. It’s the hunger. Students staying after Mass to pray. Honest conversations about faith and suffering. Packed retreats. Long lines for confession. Students desiring authentic community in a culture that often leaves people isolated and exhausted.
In a world that can feel cynical and fragmented, I believe we are witnessing something deeply hopeful: a generation rediscovering that faith is not an outdated idea, but an encounter with the living God.
The fire of faith is real.
I see it in students inviting friends to worship for the first time and in hearts opening to mercy, healing, vocation, and mission.
This moment reminds me that the Gospel still speaks powerfully to the human heart. People are still searching for transcendence. Still longing for purpose. Still asking if there is more.
And the answer is yes.
Grateful for every student, every missionary disciple, every Team member, donor, alum, and supporter who continues to help make a place where our Northwestern students can encounter Jesus and be transformed by His love. And, gosh, I am so grateful and humbled to by their Chaplain and fellow disciple.
The Church is alive.
