Verse of the Month:
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” — Colossians 3:17
The Holy Spirit, through Paul, takes the entire Christian life and places it under one sweeping command: everything we do is to be done for Christ. Not just the spiritual things, church things, or the moments when we feel like being spiritual. Everything!!
The key phrase is “whatsoever ye do… do all.”
• Whatsoever = everything
• In word = speech
• In deed = actions
• Do all = no exceptions
Colossians 3:17 defines the scope of the work: “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed…”
As mentioned above, the Spirit leaves no part of life untouched. Consider what this includes: our conversations, our decisions, our work ethic, our home life, our ministry, our habits, etc.
The Holy Spirit is not limiting this to church life, ministry life, or so-called spiritual moments. He explicitly includes every word and every action: “whatsoever we do.” That means the entire Christian life falls under this command. The work we do for Christ is not confined to a church building; it is lived out in kitchens, classrooms, offices, and quiet moments when no one else sees. Christian service is not a task or a time slot, it is your life.
Colossians 3:17 defines the motive of the work: “do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…”
To act in “the name of the Lord Jesus” means: under His authority, in obedience to His Word, and for His glory.
This keeps our service from becoming mechanical or self-centered. We don’t serve to earn favor or to impress others. We serve because we belong to Christ, and everything we do reflects on Him.
Colossians 3:17 also defines the spirit of the work: “giving thanks to God…”
Gratitude is the fuel of Christian service, because a thankful heart doesn’t drag its feet or complain about the load. A thankful heart sees service as a privilege, not a burden.
When we remember what Christ has done for us, thanksgiving becomes the natural posture of our work.
Ask yourself:
• Do my words and actions consistently reflect the name of Christ?
• Am I serving with gratitude or simply out of routine?
• What part of my daily life have I kept separate instead of surrendering it to Christ?
• How can I intentionally honor Christ in the ordinary moments?
When every word and deed is done for Christ, the whole Christian life becomes an act of worship. This is what it means to work till Jesus comes; faithfully, joyfully, and thankfully, in every part of life.
