Wednesday Night Bible Study 6/3/26

05/31/2026

Join us for a special message delivered by John Lindsey who will be sharing his story, which is ongoing, about how God called him to minister in Liberia, and the eternal connection we can establish now with believers around the world. He will share about his new relationship with a former warlord who turned from violence to the love of God in Christ to serve the people in his country, and how the church - the body of Christ - can transform a nation one child at a time.

The Book of Joel - If you had provided blessings to a group of people for a very long time but they continued to do things they knew displeased you, what would you do?
Would you abandon them?
Would you destroy them?
How does love respond to unfaithfulness and disobedience?

The book of Joel is one of many books of the Bible that describe God's judgment of both the Jews and the surrounding nations, but also His forgiveness and restoration for those who repent. For example, Joel 1 describes an invading army of locusts sent by God to destroy all the crops in Judah, such that the "people's joy is withered away" (Joel 1:12). Why? Because of their disobedience. And the first group God calls on to "put on sackcloth and mourn" (Joel 1:13) are the priests. In fact, God had to call on one faithful man - a prophet - to call the people and the priests to repentance, which they do, and the Lord, who is "gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love," "relents from sending calamity" (Joel 2:13), and sends them "grain, new wine and olive oil, enough to satisfy you fully" (Joel 2:19).

So why study this book? Because Christ is coming to judge the whole world, and Joel 3:14 says: "Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision." And because 1 Peter 4:17 says: "For it is time for judgment to begin with God's household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?"

So here are some questions we need to consider:

1) In light of our nation's 250th birthday, how are we doing as "one nation under God?"

2) Are the "priests" in the churches in America helping the "multitudes in the valley of decision" know the truth about God and His plan to deliver and restore us through His Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

3) Is God calling you to warn your priest and the flock in your church to repent?

4) If the church were to repent, what impact might that have on those "in the valley of decision?"

Join us at 6 pm on Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall as we explore this critically important word from God for "such a time as this" (Esther 4:14).

Psalm 26 - In a culture that is obsessed with popular opinion, polls and numbers of followers or "hits" on social media, it's easy to see how even the church could become motivated by popular opinion rather than God's opinion. However, how could we reconcile seeking to be popular with the culture with the words of our Lord in John 15:19: "If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you." And again from Christ through Paul in Galatians 1:10: "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

How do we do that? God gives us the answer through David, who through his own experience, teaches us how to live by faith - not fear.

Sermon: "Righteous Integrity"

In a culture that is obsessed with popular opinion, polls and numbers of followers or "hits" on social media, it's easy to see how even the church could become motivated by popular opinion rather than God's opinion. However, how could we reconcile seeking to be popular with the culture with the words of our Lord in John 15:19: "If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

How do we do that?

God gives us the answer through David, who through his own experience, teaches us how to live by faith - not fear. So join this Sunday at 11 am as we continue to learn how to become "imitators of God, as beloved children" (Ephesians 5:1). If you cannot join us in person, please join us virtually via YouTube (Riverview Church Evans Ga).

Psalm 25: 16-22

David now turns to the final portion of his prayer, which deals with how we are to live and remain strong in faith in a world bent on doing evil. David describes feeling alone and experiencing increasing distress from his enemies in this spiritual battle, but his request in verse 21 may come as a surprise: "May integrity and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for you." Not only that, but he sees his example of faithfulness as Israel's leader paramount in redeeming Israel "from all its distress" (v. 22).

As the body of Christ, therefore, we can't just be concerned about ourselves or our families. Just as we learned this past Sunday, God's desire is that we share in His plan to redeem the world, and that begins with faithful individuals banding together as the church to continue to set the example Christ set: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34-35). Therefore, we begin by loving God - that is, prefering (agapeo) what He prefers. Then, we prefer what God prefers for us by doing what David did in v.1-2a: "O Lord, I give my life to you. I trust in you, my God!" That's how, therefore, we learn to "love our neighbor as ourselves" (Mark 12:31, Matthew 19:19, Matthew 22:39, Luke 10:27).

Therefore, you won't want to miss this powerful conclusion to a powerful prayer that can transform a nation!

Just as Obadiah is dedicated to the destruction of the descendants of Esau, Nahum is dedicated to the total destruction of the Assyrians, whose political capital was Nineveh, which you may remember from the book of Jonah. The Assyrians were the ones God used to capture the ten northern tribes of Israel (sometimes referred to as the lost tribes of Israel) for their unfaithfulness in 721 B.C.E. They also captured all of the cities in Judah, the southern kingdom of Israel, with the exception of Jerusalem, during the time of the reign of Hezekiah in Judah and Sennacharib in Assyria (we will look at the amazing story of God's victory over the Assyrians in 2 Kings 18-19).

This book is more than just history and prophecy. It is about God's sovereignty in blessing those who are faithful and destroying those who continuously defy Him. God's grace and mercy have an expiration date for individuals, nations, and as the book of Revelation reveals, the world. Therefore, we need to examine ourselves as individuals and as the church, the body of Christ, to ensure that we love what God loves and hate what God hates. But we also need to learn what it means to have an attitude like Christ toward all people, and leaving judgment to God the Father.
