Psalm 25: 16-22
David now turns to the final portion of his prayer, which deals with how we are to live and remain strong in faith in a world bent on doing evil. David describes feeling alone and experiencing increasing distress from his enemies in this spiritual battle, but his request in verse 21 may come as a surprise: "May integrity and uprightness preserve me, because I wait for you." Not only that, but he sees his example of faithfulness as Israel's leader paramount in redeeming Israel "from all its distress" (v. 22).
As the body of Christ, therefore, we can't just be concerned about ourselves or our families. Just as we learned this past Sunday, God's desire is that we share in His plan to redeem the world, and that begins with faithful individuals banding together as the church to continue to set the example Christ set: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34-35). Therefore, we begin by loving God - that is, prefering (agapeo) what He prefers. Then, we prefer what God prefers for us by doing what David did in v.1-2a: "O Lord, I give my life to you. I trust in you, my God!" That's how, therefore, we learn to "love our neighbor as ourselves" (Mark 12:31, Matthew 19:19, Matthew 22:39, Luke 10:27).
Therefore, you won't want to miss this powerful conclusion to a powerful prayer that can transform a nation!
