On June 1, 1843, Sojourner Truth officially changed her name from Isabella Baumfree to Sojourner Truth, declaring, "The Spirit calls me, and I must go." Sojourner Truth’s life and abolitionist work were deeply shaped by Methodism. After gaining her freedom in 1827, she joined the John Street Methodist Church.
