Prelude

Welcome

Introit: GtG #338

 Call to Worship – Adapted from Psalm 116: 1-2, 12-19

I love the Lord,
the Lord has heard the voice of my supplication
and inclined an ear to me whenever I cried out.

How shall I repay you, O Lord,
for all the good things you have done for me?

I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call upon the Holy Name.

I will fulfill my vows to God
in the presence of all the members of
the household of God.

Precious in your sight, God of Life,
are your servants.

Merciful God, I am your servant;
in the honor of my mother and father I serve you.

I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call upon the Holy Name.

In the presence of all the people;
in holy places of peace,
and in times of hardship
I will live according to my promises.
Hallelujah!

Let us pray:
God our Redeemer,
you have delivered us from death in the resurrection of Jesus Christ
and brought us to new life by the power of your Spirit.
Give us grace to keep our promises
to praise and serve you all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 Opening Songs: Worship Team

I Could Sing of Your Love Forever
(w/Psalm 138)
Words/Music: Martin Smith (w/GtG #334)

Over the mountains and the sea
Your river runs with love for me
And I will open up my heart
And let the Healer set me free
I'm happy to be in the truth
And I will daily lift my hands
For I will always sing
Of when Your love came down yeah

Chorus:
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever
I could sing of Your love forever

O Lord, enthroned in glory bright,
You reign alone in heavenly height;
The proud in vain your favor seek,
But you have mercy for the meek.
Through trouble though my pathway be,
You will revive and strengthen me,
For I will always sing
Of when Your love came down yeah

Oh I feel like dancing
It's foolishness I know
But when the world has seen the light
They will dance with joy like we're dancing now
(Chorus)

How Great Is Our God
(Come Christians Join to Sing)
Words/Music by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves, Ed Cash and Stuart K. Hine

The splendor of the King
Clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice
All the earth rejoice
He wraps Himself in light
And darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice
And trembles at His voice

Chorus:
How great is our God
Sing with me
How great is our God
And all will see how great,
How great is our God

Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands
Beginning and the End
Beginning and the End
The Godhead three in one
Father Spirit Son
The Lion and the Lamb
The Lion and the Lamb
(Chorus)

Name above all names
Worthy of our praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God
(Repeat)

Come, Christians, join to sing,
loud praise to Christ our King.
Let all with heart and voice
before the throne rejoice;
come, lift your hearts on high;
let praises fill the sky;
God’s goodness we adore,
and sing forever more.
(Chorus)

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
leaning on the everlasting arms,
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, leaning,
safe and secure from all alarms;
leaning, leaning,
leaning on the everlasting arms.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture: Matthew 10:5-23

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not take a road leading to gentiles, and do not enter a Samaritan town, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick; raise the dead; cleanse those with a skin disease; cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff, for laborers deserve their food. Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of S***m and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

“I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Sibling will betray sibling to death and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in this town, flee to the next, for truly I tell you, you will not have finished going through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Sermon: “More than a flavor”

Offertory Hymn:
O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, CH #21
Words: Charles Wesley
Music: Carl G. Glazer; arr. by Lowell Mason

O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories of my God and King,
the triumphs of His grace.

Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
that bids our sorrows cease,
‘tis music in the sinner’s ears,
‘tis life and health and peace.

He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me.

Hear Him, ye deaf;
His praise, ye dumb,
your loosened tongues employ;
ye blind behold your Savior come;
and leap, ye lame for joy.

My gracious Master and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread thro’ all the earth abroad,
the honors of Thy name.

 Offertory Response:

Prayer of Intercession [Offer your Prayers in the comments, with those whom you are gathered, in person or online]

The Lord’s Prayer (Ecumenical)
English Language Liturgical Council – 1988

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory
are yours now and forever. Amen.

 Closing Hymn:
We Are Called to Be God’s People, CH #415
Words: Thomas A. Jackson
Tune: Austrian Hymn

We are called to be God’s people,
showing by our lives His grace,
one in heart and one in spirit,
sign of hope for all the race.
Let us show how He has changed us
and remade us as His own;
let us share our life together
as we shall around His throne.

We are called to be God’s servants,
working in His world today;
taking His own task upon us,
all His sacred words obey.
Let us rise then, to His summons,
dedicate to Him our all,
that we may be faithful servants,
quick to answer now His call.

We are called to be God’s prophets,
speaking for the truth and right;
standing firm for godly justice,
bringing evil into light.
Let us seek the courage needed,
pour high calling to fulfill,
that we all may know the blessing
of the doing of God’s will.

 Call to Worship – from Psalm 33
from PC(USA) Book of Common Worship

Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous;
it is good for the just to sing praises.

Praise the Lord with voices raised up;
sing praise to the Holy One.

Sing for the Lord a new song;
sound a fanfare with all your skill upon the trumpet.

For your word, O God, is right,
and all your works are sure.

You love righteousness and justice;
your loving-kindness, O Lord, fills the whole earth.

Our souls wait for you, O Lord;
you are our help and our shield.

Indeed, our hearts rejoice in you,
for in your holy name we put our trust.

Let your loving-kindness, O Lord, be upon us,
as we have put our trust in you.

Let us pray:
Holy God,
you made heaven and earth,
and through your Chosen One you continue to accomplish
your purpose for creation.
Make us witnesses to your truth and instruments of your peace,
that all may know you are the God of justice,
and trust The Holy Name.
Amen.

Gather Us In, GtG #401
Words/Music: Marty Haugen

Here in this place, new light is streaming,
now is the darkness, vanished away,
see, in this space, our fears and our dreamings,
brought here to you in the light of this day.
Gather us in, the lost and forsaken;
gather us in, the blind and the lame;
call to us now, and we shall awaken,
we shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young, our lives are a mystery;
we are the old, who yearn for your face,
we have been sung throughout all of history,
called to be light to the whole human race.
Gather us in, the rich and the haughty;
gather us in, the proud and the strong;
give us a heart so meek and so lowly,
give us the courage to enter the song.

Here we will take the wine of new promise,
here we will take the bread of new birth,
here you shall call your sons and your daughters,
call us anew to be salt for the earth.
Give us to drink the wine of compassion,
give us to eat, the bread that is you;
nourish us well, and teach us to fashion
lives that are holy and hearts that are true.

Not in the dark of buildings confining,
not in some heaven light years away,
but here in this space, the new light is shining,
now is the kingdom, now is the day.
Gather us in, and hold us forever;
gather us in, and make us your own;
gather us in, all peoples together,
fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

You are Holy – Worship Team
Words/Music: Per Harling

You are holy, you are whole.
You are always ever more
than we ever understand.
You are always at hand.

Blessed are you coming near.
Blessed are you coming here
to your church in wine and bread,
raised from soil, raised from dead.

You are holy,
you are wholeness;
you are present.
Let the cosmos praise you, Lord!

Sing hosanna
in the highest!
Sing hosanna!
Sing hosanna to our God!

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture: Acts 4:21-31

After threatening Peter and John, the temple authorities let them go, finding no way to punish them because of the people, for all of them praised God for what had happened.

After they were released, they went to their own people and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. When they heard it, they raised their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, it is you who said by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant:

‘Why did the gentiles rage
and the peoples imagine vain things?
The kings of the earth took their stand,
and the rulers have gathered together
against the Lord and against his Messiah.’

“For in this city, in fact, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the gentiles and the peoples of Israel, gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.

Sermon: “Past, Tense”

Offertory Hymn:
Spirit of the Living God, CH #389
Words: Daniel Iverson, Lowell Alexander
Music: Daniel Iverson

Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.

Soul of heaven, heart of God, wash over me.
Soul of heaven, heart of God, wash over me.
Cleanse me, teach me, hold me, reach me.
Soul of heaven, heart of God, wash over me.

Holy presence, love divine, cast out my fear.
Holy presence, love divine cast out my fear.
Shield me, free me, call me, lead me.
Holy presence, love divine, cast out my fear.

 Offertory Response:
Let All Things Now Living, GtG #37
Words: Katherine K. Davis
Tune: Ash Grove

Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving
to God our Creator triumphantly raise;
who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us,
by guiding us on to the end of our days.

We too should be voicing our love and rejoicing;
with glad adoration, a song let us raise,
till all things now living unite in thanksgiving:
to God in the highest, hosanna and praise!

Invitation to Holy Communion

Jesus said:
Come to me, all you that are weary and are
carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me;
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you!

And also with you!

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is truly right and our greatest joy
to give you thanks and praise,

God of majesty and splendor,
by your power you created all that is,
making a universe out of chaos,
and ruling over all things in love.

Throughout the ages you called your people
to love and serve you,
and to be your light among the nations.
When we failed you, you did not fail us
and sent prophets to call us back to your ways.

We praise you that in the fullness of time,
you revealed your love
by sending your Son Jesus
to be the Light of the world.
He came to heal our brokenness
and to set before us the ways of justice and peace.

Therefore we praise you,
joining our voices with the heavenly choirs
and with all the faithful of every time and place.

[Sung Response – tune NICAEA]:

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky, and sea.
Only Thou art holy--there is none beside Thee,
perfect in power, in love, in purity.

Words of the Institution – Matthew 26:26-29

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying,

“Take and eat; this is my body.”

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

“Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew, with you, in my Father’s kingdom.”

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise, CH #33
Words: Walter Chalmers Smith
Music: Traditional Welsh Hymn melody

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes.
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious—Thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life Thou givest—to both great and small
in all life Thou livest—the true life of all.
Thy wisdom so boundless, Thy mercy so free,
eternal Thy goodness for naught changeth Thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
all praise we would render--O help us to see
‘tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!

 Call to Worship – Adapted from Psalm 119
(from the United Church of Christ in the Philippines)

Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees;
then I will keep them to the end.

Give me understanding, and I will keep your law
and obey it with all my heart.

Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward
selfish gain.

Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word,

Fulfill your promise to your servant so that you may be feared. How I long for your precepts! Preserve my life in your righteousness.

 Opening Songs: Worship Team

Holy Spirit Rain Down
Words/Music: Russell Fragar

Refrain:
Holy Spirit rain down, rain down;
O Comforter and Friend,
how we need Your touch again;
Holy Spirit rain down, rain down;
let Your power fall,
let Your voice be heard;
come and change our hearts
as we stand on your Word;
Holy Spirit, rain down.
(Repeat refrain)

No eye has seen, no ear has heard;
no mind can know what God has in store,
so open up heaven, open it wide,
over Your church and over our lives.
(Refrain)

Let your power fall,
let Your voice be heard;
come and change our hearts
as we stand on Your Word;
Holy Spirit, rain down.

Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness, GtG #291
Words/Music: James K. Manley

Refrain:
Spirit, spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free.
Spirit, spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters; you called to the deep
then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;
and over the eons you called to each thing,
“Awake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.”

You swept through the desert; you stung with the sand;
and you goaded your people with a law and a land.
When they were confounded with idols and lies,
then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes.
(Refrain)

You sang in a stable; you cried from a hill;
then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still.
And down in the city, you called once again
when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind.

You call from tomorrow; you break ancient schemes;
from the bo***ge of sorrow the captives dream dreams.
Our women see visions; our men clear their eyes.
With bold new decisions your people arise.

We Are One in the Spirit, GtG #300
Words/Music: Peter Scholtes

We are one in the Spirit;
we are one in the Lord;
and we pray that all unity
may one day be restored.

And they’ll know we are Christians
by our love, by our love;
yes, they’ll know we are Christians
by our love.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture: Matthew 19:13-22
Then children were being brought to him in order that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples spoke sternly to those who brought them, but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” And he laid his hands on them and went on his way.

Then someone came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother. Also, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Sermon: “Today’s Less-on”

Offertory Hymn:
I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry, GtG #488
Words/Music: John C. Ylvisaker

“I was there to hear your borning cry;
I’ll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized
to see your life unfold.
I was there when you were but a child
with a faith to suit you well;
in a blaze of light you wandered
off to find where demons dwell.”

“When you heard the wonder of the Word,
I was there to cheer you on.
You were raised to praise the living Lord
to whom you now belong.
If you find someone to share your time
and you join your hearts as one,
I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme
from dusk till rising sun.”

“In the middle ages of your life,
not too old, no longer young,
I’ll be there to guide you through the night,
complete what I’ve begun.
When the evening gently closes in
and you shut your weary eyes,
I’ll be there as I have always been
with just one more surprise.”

“I was there to hear your borning cry;
I’ll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized
to see your life unfold.

Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart, CH #390
Words: George Croly
Music: Frederick C. Atkinson

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
wean it from earth, thro’ all its pulses move;
stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art,
and make me love Thee as I ought to love.

Hast Thou not bid us love Thee, God and King?
All, all Thine own soul, heart, and strength, and mind!
I see Thy cross--there teach my heart to cling;
O let me seek Thee, and O let me find!

Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh;
teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,
to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;
teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.

Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love,
one holy passion filling all my frame;
the baptism of the heav’n-descended Dove--
my heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.

 Call to Worship
Adapted from Joel 2

God Proclaims, “In those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of my people, I will gather all nations, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.”

Our sons and daughters will prophesy, our elders will dream dreams, our young will see visions.

In every household, across all divisions, all who serve the
Holy One will receive the Spirit, poured out as an offering
to the people of God.

We will see wonders, in heaven and on Earth, and know that it is the work of our God.

Creator God, at the feast of Pentecost you sent your Holy Spirit to the disciples, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel; empower us with that same Spirit to witness to your redeeming love and draw all people, from the ends of the earth, to you. Make us messengers of the good news that, through the power of your Spirit, all the world may unite in one song of praise in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

Amen

Live in the kindness and joy of God's wing
God will protect us from darkness and death

Sweet Sweet Spirit, CH #391
Words/Music: Doris Akers

There's a sweet sweet Spirit in this place
And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord
There are sweet expressions on each face
And I know they feel the presence of the Lord

Chorus:
Sweet Holy Spirit
Sweet heavenly Dove
Stay right here with us
Filling us with Your love
And for these blessings
We lift our hearts in praise
Without a doubt we'll know
That we have been revived
When we shall leave this place

There are blessings you cannot receive
Till you know Him in His fullness and believe
You're the one to profit when you say
I am going to walk with Jesus all the way
(Chorus)

If you say He saved you from your sin
Now You're weak you're bound and cannot enter in
You can make it right if you will yield
You'll enjoy the Holy Spirit that we feel
(Chorus)

Without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived
when we shall leave this place.

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every people under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?

All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Fellow Jews and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel.

Sermon: “Reversal of Misfortune”

Scripture: Genesis 11:1-9

Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth, and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Offertory Hymn:
Breathe on Me Breath of God, CH #393
Words: Edwin Hatch
Music: Robert Jackson

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what Thou dost love,
and do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until with Thee I will one will,
to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
till I am wholly Thine,
until this earthly part of me
glows with Thy fire divine,

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with Thee the perfect life
of Thine eternity.

 Offertory Response:
O Jesus, I Have Promised, GtG #724, v.4
Words: John Ernest Bode
Tune: Angel’s Story

O Jesus, thou hast promised
to all who follow thee
that where thou art in glory
there shall thy servant be.
And, Jesus, I have promised
to serve thee to the end;
O give me grace to follow,
my Master and my friend.

Prayer of Intercession [Offer your Prayers in the comments, with those whom you are gathered, in person or online]

The Lord’s Prayer (Ecumenical)
English Language Liturgical Council – 1988

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory
are yours now and forever. Amen.

 Closing Hymn:
All People That on Earth Do Dwell, CH #101
Words: William Kethe, Scottish Psalter, 1565
Tune: Old Hundredth

All people that on earth do dwell,
sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.
Him serve with fear; His praise forth tell.
Come ye before Him and rejoice.

The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
without our aid He did us make,
we are His flock; He doth us feed,
and for His sheep He doth us take.

O enter then His gates with praise;
approach with joy His courts unto.
Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
for it is seemly so to do.

For why? The Lord our God is good;
His mercy is forever sure,
His truth at all times firmly stood,
and shall from age to age endure.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
the God whom heav’n and earth adore,
from earth and from the angel host
be praise and glory evermore.
Amen.

Benediction
