The Haven Missionary Care Center

The Haven Missionary Care Center Our Mission: refresh Christian missionaries physically & spiritually in preparation for more effective and fruitful ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Haven Missionary Care Center (HMCC) is located in a rural area of northeastern North Carolina in the quaint village of Eure at 243 Hill Lane Rd. It's about a 90 minute drive to the beautiful outer banks (Kitty Hawk, Wright Brothers Memorial, Jockey Ridge). Millpond State Park is a 15-minute drive away for hiking / biking trails, canoeing /kayaking, with well-kept picnic areas. HMCC serves miss

ionaries around the world by providing a “safe” place for spiritual, emotional, and physical rest and restoration. We offer a quiet setting for our guests to reconnect with the vision God has given them. We do this through debrief, biblical counseling, time alone, and fellowship. Susan Westfall, a 40+-year veteran missionary and first responder chaplain and skilled in debriefing, serves alongside Bob and Ann Tayloe (director). Together we believe “A Refreshed Missionary is an Effective Missionary.”

“Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love… given to hospitality. Romans 12:10a & 13b

The Haven Guests through the seasons:
Our vision for The Haven Missionary Care Center was and is to host as many families as the Lord brings our way. God has honored our prayers and we are blessed beyond measure. Several times the families have overlapped, which has brought double the blessings to us all.

The Haven has been wonderfully blessed with guests from eastern Europe to India, from Africa to western Europe and several places around the USA. Altogether, The Haven has welcomed 16 families, including 28 adults and 22 children. Thank you for praying and being a part of this ministry to missionaries and pastors from around the world.

Great news! Two projects that have been in the making for the past two years – COMPLETED!
A BILLBOARD and a BOOK:
The Safe Haven Baby Box BILLBOARD is now up in Gates County just north of the Chowan River bridge. This billboard is part of Safe Haven Baby Box installed at Gates County Rescue & EMS Station 10.

For many students, this is the season of tests and “Final Exams.” In fact, if you think about it, we are all taking final exams and being tested in some aspect of our lives every day. I just received an update from one of The Haven’s former missionary guests. Stacy is serving as a missionary in Africa where God led her about three years ago. She is one of the teachers at the school she refers to. Read this letter carefully and ask yourself, “Can I ACE this test?”

“JOY TO THE WORLD, HE IS RISEN, HALLELUJAH!”

This week, often referred to as Holy Week, is a unique week for Christians all over the world. The week culminates in what many refer to as “Easter.” Did you know that Easter was not originally celebrated by Christians? It has its roots in ancient pagan traditions before it became the designated holiday for the Jewish Passover traditions.
The word "Easter" itself is likely derived from the name of an Anglo-Saxon goddess, Eostre, the goddess of fertility. Since its inception, the timing of Easter is on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere. Since it was a holiday to celebrate new growth, it also included bunnies and eggs, age-old symbols of fertility and new life.
All of this information can be easily found in a google search, but I include it here in order to make a point. This holy day is truly the most important day for Christians all over the world. On this day we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and the new life He offers to everyone in the world who believes on Him. In that vein, I’d like to propose that the correct reference to the day should be RESURRECTION SUNDAY.
Resurrection Sunday has always been an important part of my life from the time I was born. I remember many family gatherings and a roasted leg of lamb for our meal, which I didn’t exactly appreciate at the time. After I married and had two children of my own, our southern California church presented special music on that Sunday in 1976. It was “The Easter Song” by Annie Herring, which she had released two years before.
50 years later and I still listen to this song each year. I find that it still offers an amazing dimension of praise and worship. The powerful words and music help bring attention to the reason for our celebration: the resurrected Savior, Jesus Christ, which is Who Resurrection Sunday is all about. The song has a miraculous way of lifting you beyond the cares of this world and focuses your mind and heart on the reason for this celebration – Jesus Christ, God incarnate, resurrected Savior and soon coming King.
“JOY TO THE WORLD, HE IS RISEN, HALLELUJAH!”
I encourage you to listen to “The Easter Song” on a YouTube video as you rejoice in the LORD on this Resurrection Sunday. My favorite presentation is by Keith Green, a fellow musician and a close friend of Annie and her family.

Besides the blessing of hosting missionaries and ministry leaders at The Haven over the past 12 months, Bob and Ann hit personal milestones. We both celebrated 75 years of life. 75 doesn’t sound too old until you realize that it means three-quarters of a century! As 2024 has progressed, we have surely felt the effects of the aging process on our bodies.

For Bob, it became apparent in March that an injury he sustained a couple years ago from chopping (and tossing) logs, had damaged his right rotator cuff. His arthroscopic procedure to repair it was April 25th. Although there was more repair needed than at first thought, he is recuperating well.

Since we had so many jaunts to OrthoEast in Greenville NC this year for Bob (about 1.5 hour’s drive south), I decided to make an appointment for myself to check out why my knees and lower back were bothering me so much. I learned that I needed patellofemoral resurfacing arthroplasty. Interpretation: the cartilage under both my kneecaps has totally degenerated and needs to be surgically “cleaned out”, and a “button” planted as a cushion so bone doesn’t scrape against bone. Good news: my knee joints themselves are in good shape!) In May I received the diagnosis of a herniated lumbar disk that was not surgically correctible. My doctor ordered a lumbar support which has really helped.

With the doctor’s recommendation, Bob had his surgery first. About 10 weeks later (after Bob had recuperated sufficiently), Ann would begin her surgical “season.” Surgery on my right knee is July 10th with the left knee scheduled 8-10 weeks later, depending on initial recovery time.

As we begin the second half of 2024, all of this has been rather daunting, especially as we thought we were aging rather gracefully. Nevertheless, we praise the Lord for His amazing Word that continually comforts and encourages us no matter what we are experiencing in the physical. Which is one of the reasons I decided to take the month of July to read through the Psalms and Proverbs.

My daily devotion regimen is to meditate on five psalms in the morning and one proverb (corresponding to the day of the month) in the evening. This schedule allows time to reflect on the rich beauty and instruction of the Lord found in them.

Psalm 92 is quite uplifting to me at this point, especially verses 12-15 (NLT): “The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the LORD; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the LORD is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”

Though this season is difficult for us physically, the Lord continues to assure us that He is not finished with us yet. We are thankful for the great and precious promises God gives us throughout His powerful Word. We are grateful for your powerful prayers during this season of our lives. Praise the Lord! God is not finished with us yet.

Cotton fields are beautiful when ready for harvest! That and so much more is happening around The Haven Missionary Care Center! Besides hosting seven groups of guests since May 2023 (South Africa, USA & Haiti), we completed another GriefShare support group. Also, the Safe Haven Baby Box (SHBB.org) project we began nearly two years ago was dedicated and is available in our county. The event was given front page coverage in our local newspaper. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! If you'd like to be on our email list to receive our updates, send a private message with your preferred email.
