You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope. – Psalm 119:114

Sometimes when life gets tough, we just need someone to have our back. When you have those moments when you feel like you can’t keep going or that life is just too hard, it’s important to remember what today’s Bible verse says.

This verse tells us first that God is our refuge and shield. That means when things get tough, we can go to Him and He will keep us safe and be a place of refuge. When life gets hard and you have difficulty trying to keep going, you can remember that you can always go to God and He will be your place to get recharged and feeling better about life.

We also see in this verse that God’s word can be our source of hope. No matter how crazy life gets, we can always have hope. We see in the Bible that we can make it through. God’s word is so important because it gives us hope. We see in it that we can do all things through Christ and that God will never leave us or forsake us. So even though life sometimes is hard, you can be encouraged to know that God will always take care of us!

IN THE NAME OF JESUS! – A DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE
PRAY:
ord Jesus, thank you for the power that your name carries.

READ:
Acts 3.1-26

While Peter and John were making their way to the temple to get their church on, a lame man, sitting in front of the gate, begs them money. The two men tell him to look at them, and the lame guy thinks he’s getting money. But then, Peter tells the guy that he doesn’t have any money but he has power to heal in the name of Jesus! Peter orders him to start walking and the guy stand up and starts leaping for joy. He then goes and gets his church on with Peter and John. People who witness the miracle are amazed. Others who missed the actual event sees the man walking, jumping, and praising God in the temple. The people are blown away. Peter tells the people, “You see this man, and you know him. He put his faith in the name of Jesus and was made strong. Faith in Jesus made this man completely well while everyone was watching” (v 16).

Throughout the Gospels, we see healings and miracles that take place when believers call on the name of Jesus. But, we can also use Jesus’ name to declare things over our own lives. When Jesus took our place on the cross, he gave us access to power beyond our finite imagination. We, too, have the same power and authority that Peter and John had. It's by God's grace and mercy that we can use this beautiful and almighty name of Jesus that breaks every chain of sin. When we use it, it shows we are dependent on Jesus!

REFLECT:
Do you believe there is power in the name of Jesus? Think of instances where you have seen or experienced the healing power of the name of Jesus. Praise God for them.

RESPOND:
When you pray, begin to use the name of Jesus. As you make your requests to God, declare them in the name of Jesus.

Jesus, I know there is power in your name. Let me be bold like Peter and John and use the power you have given me in your name, for your glory.

CALLED TO BE OUT FRONT!
PRAY:
God, thank you that I am the head and not the tail, I am above and not beneath. I’ve been called to lead others to you, and I am honored.

Acts 2.1-47

On the day of Pentecost, the room was filled with the presence of God. Just as Jesus had promised, the Holy Spirit came on Jesus’ followers like a bolt of fire. When it fell on each person, they began speaking different languages. Imagine that! A bunch of believers from different nations who had gathered in Jerusalem to seek God's face, were surprised to hear these followers speaking languages they did not know. Soon a crowd gathered around and they mocked the people who were praying and speaking these new languages because they looked drunk and weird. But Peter, who not too long before had acted grimy by denying he knew Jesus, was now the front man for the group. He explained that the people were not weird or drunk. What the crowd was seeing, up close and personal, was really a prophecy, told by the prophet Joel, coming true. God had promised to send his Spirit to his people and it was happening, just as God had said!

Many times you will be mocked by the world for following Jesus, but don’t worry about it because Jesus himself was mocked, yet he overcame everything evil in the world.

REFLECT:
Are you willing to be a leader for God and not a follower after the things the world offers? Do you find your worth in what others think or say about you?

RESPOND:
Although we live in a fallen world where sinning is the cool thing to do, our mission is to lead others to Jesus and discourage them from following what seems pleasurable at the moment. This week, take time to introduce someone to Jesus who is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14.6).

Lord, when I’m out front, remind me that I’m there to rep you, and you alone. Give me courage and let me not back down no matter how others may mock me.

RELAX, GOD IS IN CONTROL
PRAY:
Lord, help me to depend on you and be confident that you always keep your promises.

READ:
Acts 1.1-26

After Jesus’ resurrection, his followers seemed anxious about the future. But Jesus promised them it would be alright. Before he ascended to heaven, Jesus told them that the Father would give them the Holy Spirit as a helper. It is the Holy Spirit that guides and directs our lives. We just need to stop worrying and trust in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes, there are things that we want too quickly. We have dreams and goals and in our haste we tell God “I want it now!” It seems we forget that God has chosen us and that he will use our gifts and talents for his glory, in his own time. As the story of the book of Acts opens, Jesus’ followers learn that God is above us, around us, and in us. He never leaves us or forsakes us. That’s great news—we can chill, God is in control!

REFLECT:
Sometimes life can get overwhelming and hard to manage, but our best friend, Jesus, tells us to lean on him. Are you willing to break old habits? Are you willing to replace them with new ones that honor God? The angels told Jesus’ followers that Jesus will come back again. Think about it. How does it make you feel?

RESPOND:
Maybe you want to trust in Jesus, but don't know where to start. Try small things like reading one chapter of the Bible daily so that you can find God’s promises for your life. If you are willing, your heart can be changed by God’s awesome Spirit. It’s a decision you won’t regret.

Lord, I am glad you have my back and I can just relax because I know you have everything covered. Thank you for the Holy Spirit which controls my life.

Do We Really Understand What It Means That Jesus Is Our Messiah?
By Jessica Mouser -

While we probably need to take a class (or 10) to even begin exploring what the entire Bible says about our messiah, this video from The Bible Project is a good place to start.

“Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge, And he sins who hastens with his feet. The foolishness of a man twists his way, And his heart frets against the LORD.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭19:2-3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

THE FARMER AND THE SNAKE.

Aesop, a Greek slave who lived about six hundred years before Christ, recorded many fables short stories that were intended to teach an important truth. One of Aesop's fables was the story of the farmer and the snake.

One winter a farmer was walking down the dirt road near his farm when he saw a snake lying across the road, stiff and frozen from the cold.

The farmer felt sorry for the snake and picked it up. He cradled the poisonous creature against his chest, and before long the warmth of the man's body began to revive the snake. Immediately upon gaining the use of its muscles, the snake coiled and bit the farmer, inflicting a deadly wound.

The farmer was foolish, of course. He should have known better. He should not have taken a chance with a poisonous snake.

Many people make the same mistake today. Oh, they may not pick up snakes from the road, but they do something that is infinitely more dangerous. They play with sin. They flirt with temptation. They make wrong choices. And they wonder why they can't seem to find happiness and fulfillment. Sometimes their wrong choices have tragic consequences, and they look at their ruined lives and ask, "How could God do this to me?"

"People ruin their lives by their own foolishness," Solomon said, "and then are angry at the Lord" (Proverbs 19:3). But it's not God's fault if people who disobey him suffer the consequences of their disobedience. People who play with snakes should expect to be bitten.

REFLECT: Today's reading compares sin to a snake. In what ways do you think sin is like a snake? In what ways is it different?

Are you "playing" with any sin or "flirting" with any temptations in your life? God can help you steer clear of that sin or temptation if you let him.

PRAY: "Father God, I don't want to ruin my life by making a foolish choice. Help me to steer clear of sin and temptation, especially in the area of..."
