Sunday gathering 10:00AM at the Petersen Barn The Name: Emmaus Life (uh-mey-uh s)

The decision to call our Church Plant, Emmaus Life, comes from a story in chapter 24 of the book of Luke. In this story two disciples are walking home after the tragic death of Jesus. They are disheartened and disoriented as they walk, each trying to make sense of all that they had seen and heard. What was even more

confusing was that some of the other followers had said that Jesus had risen from the dead. As they were discussing these things Jesus came to them on the road. He asked them what they were discussing and they said that they were talking about Jesus of Nazareth (they didn't recognize that it was Jesus they were talking to). Then they spoke the words that define the story, "we had hoped that he was the one..." You see, before this, in all the time that they had spent with Jesus, they didn't fully understand what or why Jesus had really come to the world. As they walked along the road to a village called Emmaus, Jesus opened their eyes to what he had really come to do: to show the passionate, sacrificial love of God to world. The Emmaus Life is about coming to that same understanding. Each of us has an Emmaus Road story. A story of connection and understanding. A story that connects you to the God who designed you, and wants to walk with you as you discover what you were made for.

Hi Friends, tony here. Hope you had a great 4th of July with friends and family. Looking forward to getting back together with you all this Sunday! This is is week two of The Lambs sabbatical so that is why the email is coming from me.

We have committed to spending this sabbatical time time in seeking the Lord and praying about fresh vision on how the Lord wants to lead our community. Specifically we are asking for vision from the Lord on how Emmaus can be “On Mission” as a community. That being the case we are going to start this time by looking at Matthew 14:13-21 on Sunday:

“When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.”

Why do you think the “Crowds” followed Jesus out to the solitary place? What were they looking for?

What are some ways that You are being called to feed the world individually? Spend a little time the next couple days thinking about what your “bread and fish” are?

What do you feel like holds you back from feeding the people?

What are some ways that we as a church community are being called to feed the world?

Emmaus Fam! This week we will be discussing teaching/preaching/learning and how it should play out in our church. Take some time to meditate on these scriptures and consider what role these things have played in your own journey with the church. See you on Sunday!

What role does teaching and learning have in the church? Has the church placed too high an emphasis on “good teaching” without a similar emphasis on “good learning”? How do we know if a person is being taught well and learning well?

“Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them. ‘The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God’s law. You won’t go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don’t live it. They don’t take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It’s all spit-and-polish veneer. Instead of giving you God’s Law as food and drink by which you can banquet on God, they package it in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals. They seem to take pleasure in watching you stagger under these loads, and wouldn’t think of lifting a finger to help. Their lives are perpetual fashion shows, embroidered prayer shawls one day and flowery prayers the next. They love to sit at the head table at church dinners, basking in the most prominent positions, preening in the radiance of public flattery, receiving honorary degrees, and getting called ‘Doctor’ and ‘Reverend.’ Don’t let people do that to you, put you on a pedestal like that. You all have a single Teacher, and you are all classmates. Don’t set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of ‘Father’; you have only one Father, and he’s in heaven. And don’t let people maneuver you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.’”

Hey friends! This week we will be discussing PRAYER when we gather on Sunday. Take a look at these scriptures and see what pops for you. Ask yourself a few questions like:
Do I pray? When do I pray? What do my prayers feel and sound like? Is prayer difficult for me? If so, why? Do I feel guilty about not praying enough? Do I only pray out of obligation? Does prayer feel more like a good-luck charm or something that I do in the hopes that something bad doesn’t happen to me? When I tell people that I am or will be praying for them, do I mean it? Who taught me how to pray? When did that lesson happen and does it still inform my prayers today?

Our hope with Big Table, as always, is to create space in our busy lives to slow down, and enjoy a moment or two with those that God has put in our way. Bring a blanket, chairs, some food, and a few friends. Also, there will be pancakes.

What is a disciple?
What is discipleship?
Can you think of a time in your personal history as a member of a church that you were intentionally discipled by someone? If so, what did that feel like and how did it happen? If not, why do you think that it wasn’t something offered to you?
Have you ever intentionally discipled someone over a span of time? If so, what brought it about and what did it feel like to intentionally invest in someone? If not, what has prevented you from doing this?
What are the obstacles that stand in the way of this happening now?
What is our responsibility as parents in discipling our children?
Do we see raising our children as discipleship? If not—why not? If so—what does it look like?

Hey Emmaus Family! This week we are talking about Hospitality. Here are a few questions and scriptures to think on and process before we meet on Sunday:

Why is hospitality an important function for the life of a church? What does it produce in us and in others when we express it? How do we know when we or someone else is being hospitable? Are only some people gifted with hospitality or is it something that all of us should practice? Who is someone you know who is hospitable? What characteristics do they show that make you think that?

“Stay on good terms with each other, held together by love. Be ready with a meal or a bed when it’s needed. Why, some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it! Regard prisoners as if you were in prison with them. Look on victims of abuse as if what happened to them had happened to you. Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of s*xual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit s*x. Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, ‘I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,’ we can boldly quote, ‘God is there, ready to help; I’m fearless no matter what. Who or what can get to me?”

Hey Emmaus People! BIG TABLE IS BACK! I cannot tell you how excited I am that we are able to do this. Big Table has been one of Emmaus Life’s most shaping characteristics. Years ago when we started Emmaus Life we thought: Shoot, at church we talk about what it looks like to fellowship and eat together and hang out—what if we just set aside one Sunday a month to make sure we are doing just that? Big Table was born out of a hope that in the midst of our busy lives we might just take a few moments to sit across the table from another persons and share about what is happening in our lives. There have been many thoughts, feelings, hopes and struggles shared across the table.
In this last year I think that Big Table may be one of the things that I have missed the most. We are so blessed to be able to bring it back!
It will be a little different as we are still being cautious because of COVID, but we are going to sit down and eat together. It will be a picnic style hang out. Everyone is responsible to bring their own food and drinks. We will still be providing self-serve coffee. Bring a blanket, some chairs, and some brunch style foods to sit around and talk and eat with your friends. If you feel up to it, please bring someone along with you that you know is needing some community. Big Table is a great place for people to start.

We will be providing the raffle prizes for each time slot as well as covering the cost of a live band for the event.
