As we participate in Good Friday services today consider not only what Jesus endured but the compassion he still felt looking out among those who loved him and betrayed him. If only our world were a more compassionate place.

We're back! After two glorious weeks celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary in Belize, we made it back safely in the early hours of Monday morning.
I'm looking forward to all the activities this week of February 21 - 26:
Tuesday: Weekday devotions begin at 9:30 and Shared Experiences begins at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday: The beginning of Lent will be celebrated at both churches. Ash Wednesday service at Clearfield will be at 1 pm. Wellsville will have their Ash Wednesday service at 7 pm.
Sunday: Worship at our regular times. Clearfield at 9 a.m., Wellsville at 10:45. And the Methodicals will meet at 6 pm for dinner, Bible study and games.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone but I have to admit it was hard to leave the beauty of Belize and the Belizean people!

Prelude: Bringing in the light of God.

We Gather to Worship God

Call to Worship:
Pastor: We are called to bring a new understanding of God: that God so loves the world.
People: We are the salt of the earth.
Pastor: We are called to bring a new hope in God: that God gives us new life.
People: We are the light of the world.
Pastor: We are called to follow the commandments and the law.
People: The Law of God is to love God and to love one another.
Pastor: Come, let us be the salt of the earth, the light of the world.
People: Come, let us love one another with the love of God. Let us join together in our love of God to worship and follow Jesus.

Opening Hymn: Gather Us In TFWS 2236
1. Here in this place new light is streaming
Now is the darkness vanished away
See in this space our fears and our dreamings
Brought here to you in the light of this day
Gather us in, the lost and forsaken
Gather us in, the blind and the lame
Call to us now and we shall awaken
We shall arise at the sound of our name

2. We are the young, our lives are a mystery
We are the old who yearn for your face
We have been sung throughout all of history
Called to be light to the whole human race
Gather us in, the rich and the haughty
Gather us in, the proud and the strong
Give us a heart so meek and so lowly
Give us the courage to enter the song

3. Here we will take the wine and the water
Here we will take the bread of new birth
Here you shall call your sons and your daughters
Call us anew to be salt for the earth
Give us to drink the wine of compassion
Give us to eat the bread that is you
Nourish us well and teach us to fashion
Lives that are holy and hearts that are true

4. Not in the dark of buildings confining
Not in some heaven light years away
But here in this place the new light is shining
Now is the kingdom, now is the day
Gather us in and hold us forever
Gather us in and make us your own
Gather us in, all peoples together
Fire of love in our flesh and our bones

Prayer for Transformation and New Life
Pastor: This is what God hopes for us - that we will speak of the mistakes we make, so we might be forgiven. Relying on the Spirit for the right words, let us pray together, saying,

People: It is true we break your commandments, God of our lives. Much worse, we break your heart when we point the finger at those who are different from us; when we gossip about our friends and neighbors; when we think everything is all about us.
Forgive us, Loving God, we pray. We long to know your ways, so open our ears to hear those words we always ignore. We search for you each day, so open our eyes to your wonders so we may see them anew. We would believe in your promises, so fill our hearts with the presence of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Pastor: God will show us the way to God's realm. Gracious, merciful, and righteous is our God of salvation! God rebuilds our lives, repairs our mistakes, fills our emptiness with hope and joy. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen.

Prayers & Concerns

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Hymn of Preparation: What Doe the Lord Require of You TFWS 2174
1. It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.
That’s how it is with God’s love.
Once you’ve experienced it,
You spread the love to everyone.
You want to pass it on.

2. What a wond’rous time is spring,
When all the tress are budding.
The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming.
That’s how it is with God’s love,
Once you’ve experienced it.
You want to sing, it’s fresh like spring,
You want to pass it on.

3. I wish for you my friend
This happiness that I’ve found.
You can depend on God,
It matters not where you’re bound.
I’ll shout it from the mountaintop, “Praise God!”
I want the world to know
The Lord of Love has come to me.
I want to pass it on.

I’ll shout it from the mountaintop, “Praise God!”
I want the world to know
The Lord of Love has come to me.
I want to pass it on.

We Hear God’s Word
Matthew 5:13-20
“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Closing Hymn: We've a Story to Tell to the Nations UMH 569
1. We've a story to tell to the nations,
that shall turn their hearts to the right,
a story of truth and mercy,
a story of peace and light,
a story of peace and light.

Refrain:
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
and the dawning to noonday bright;
and Christ's great kingdom shall come on earth,
the kingdom of love and light.

2. We've a song to be sung to the nations,
that shall lift their hearts to the Lord,
a song that shall conquer evil
and shatter the spear and sword,
and shatter the spear and sword.
(Refrain)

3. We've a message to give to the nations,
that the Lord who reigneth above
hath sent us his Son to save us,
and show us that God is love,
and show us that God is love.
(Refrain)

4. We've a Savior to show to the nations,
who the path of sorrow hath trod,
that all of the world's great peoples
might come to the truth of God,
might come to the truth of God.
(Refrain)

Prelude: Bringing in the light of God.

We Gather to Worship God

Call to Worship:
Pastor: When we seek justice for the other,
when we love kindness more than ever,
People: we live as God asks us to live.
Pastor: When we walk humbly through life,
when we offer mercy to those who hurt us,
People: we are the blessing God hopes we will be.
Pastor: When we are willing to look foolish by following Jesus,
when we choose weakness rather than power,
People: we reflect the One who is in our midst.

Opening Hymn: Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above UMH 96
1. Praise the Lord who reigns above
and keeps his court below;
praise the holy God of love
and all his greatness show;
praise him for his noble deeds,
praise him for his matchless power;
him from whom all good proceeds
let earth and heaven adore.

2. Celebrate th' eternal God
with harp and psaltery,
timbrels soft and cymbals loud
in this high praise agree;
praise with every tuneful string;
all the reach of heavenly art,
all the powers of music bring,
the music of the heart.

3. God, in whom they move and live,
let every creature sing,
glory to their Maker give,
and homage to their King.
Hallowed be thy name beneath,
as in heaven on earth adored;
praise the Lord in every breath,
let all things praise the Lord.

Prayer for Transformation and New Life
Pastor: If we want to truly live in God's presence, we must live as God's faithful people. Let us begin by confessing all the mistakes we have made, the wrongs we have done, the people we have hurt. Join me as we pray together, saying,

People: What have we done to you, dear God? We dishonor you every time we treat another with disrespect. We shatter your heart when we find it easier to break our word, then to take the risk to keep it. We fill your ears with the gossip, lies, and slander we speak about those around us. You are wise enough to forgive our foolishness; you are strong enough to overcome our weakness; you are loving enough to heal the hurt we cause to you and to others. And so you give us new hope and new life in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Pastor: What has God done to us - shown mercy! What has God done for us - forgiven us! This is the good news for us. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Hymn of Preparation: What Doe the Lord Require of You TFWS 2174
What does the Lord require of you?
What does the Lord require of you?

Justice, kindness,
walk humbly with your God.

To seek justice and love kindness
and walk humbly with your God

We Hear God’s Word
Micah 6:1-8
Hear what the Lord says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Sh*ttim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the Lord.”

“With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Pastor: The Word of God for the people of God
People: Thanks be to God

Message: What Does the Lord Require of Me? Of You? Of Us?

Closing Hymn: Would I Have Answered When You Called TFWS 2137
Sent out in Jesus' name,
our hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.

Sent out in Jesus' name,
our hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.

1. The angels cannot change
a world of hurt and pain
into a world of love,
of justice and of peace.
The task is ours to do,
to set it really free.
O help us to obey
and carry out your will.

Sent out in Jesus' name,
our hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.

Sent out in Jesus' name,
our hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.
