The Daily Order [June 8]

Scripture - When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he began to speak and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Thoughts - There are many definitions of the word 'blessed': 'made holy', 'consecrated', 'endowed with divine favor and protection'. We are told that the biblical meaning of 'blessed' refers to a sense of inner peace, an inner joy and bliss that is constant and not affected by circumstances.
Pay attention to what you are thinking and feeling as you pray. You may be moved to talk to God about the blessings you have received. OR you may be stimulated to par for the blessings you need, or again, you may like to just sit silently and ponder these things in your heart.

The Weekly Thought -
What St. Ignatius calls disordered attachments can get the better of us - pride, greed, fear, perfectionism, the insatiable appetite for instant affirmation generated by social media, over-stimulation, the expectation of 24/7 availability, failure to realize we're stewards of creation and not its owner, obsession with prestige and status, the 'I have more than you' syndrome, and all the other attractions that draw us away from God, ourselves, and others.... leaving us in a state of emotional turbulence, excitement, and exhaustion.
My worth as a person if not determined by what I have. My material possessions, my academic attainments, my successes, my income, or my bank balance. None of those determine my worth as an invaluable and unique human. My worth is not determined by what's outside of myself. The bad spirit, the enemy of my human nature, would have me believe otherwise. I'm infinitely richer than that.
It's so easy to get caught up in what we think we need and desire, but in the cold light of the day we see the illusions for what they are. Solidarity with one another, rather than competition with one another is God's idea of what life is all about.

The Daily Order [June 5] {2nd day of Annual Conference - gonna be much busier}

Scripture - While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself, by the Holy Spirit, declared,
‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
“David himself calls him Lord, so how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.
[Mark 12: 35-37 NRSVUE]

Thoughts - Notice what you are thinking about in this reading. If a word or phrase appeals to you, pause and pay attention to what is coming up for you. If nothing comes to mind you might pray for understanding. Do you feel comfortable with the idea of Jesus teaching in the Temple and challenging the Scribes. We are told the crowds are listening to him with delight. Perhaps the status of sitting at the right hand of God held an appeal for them. Tell Jesus what you make of that.

The Daily Order [June 4] {1st day of Annual Conference}

Scripture - One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and ‘to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.
[Mark 12: 28-34 NRSVUE]

Thoughts - Do you feel comfortable with the idea of self-love? Do you eat well, take exercise, and get enough rest? Do you speak kindly to yourself OR do you judge and criticize yourself in a way that you would never talk about a neighbor? It is in the measure in which you love and accept yourself that you will beloving and accepting of your neighbor.

The Daily Order [June 3]

Scripture -
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first married and, when he died, left no children, and the second married the widow and died, leaving no children, and the third likewise; none of the seven left children. Last of all the woman herself died. In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all seven had married her.”
Jesus said to them, “Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God? For when people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is God not of the dead but of the living; you are quite wrong.”
[Mark 12: 18-27 NRSVUE]

Thoughts -
You may be tempted to ask, 'How is this relevant to my life in the world today?' Frequently the disciples, the Sadducees, and the crowds who heard Jesus speak failed to understand his meaning. Often after they questioned him, the people seemed to be no wiser. How do you think people reacted when Jesus said, "You know neither the scriptures nor the power of God'? How would you react if you were there and this question was asked of you? Talk to God about the thoughts and feelings that come up in you.

The Daily Order {June 2]

Scripture - Then they sent to him some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere and show deference to no one, for you do not regard people with partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it.” And they brought one. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this and whose title?” They answered, “Caesar’s.” Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at him.
[Mark 12: 13-17 NRSVUE]

Thoughts - The teaching is very clear. There is no ambiguity in the message, and it is as relevant today as it was when Jesus was preaching.
A challenging way to pray this reading might be to imagine talking with Jesus about how you feel regarding paying what you owe in taxes.
You might want to spend a little time reflecting on what God wants of you, and ask for the grace to say and mean, "Thy Will Be Done".

The Daily Order [June 1]

Scripture - Then he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the winepress, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went away. When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard. But they seized him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent another slave to them; this one they beat over the head and insulted. Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat, and others they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So, they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this scripture:
'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’?”
When they realized that he had told this parable against them, they wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowd.
[Mark 12: 1-12 NRSVUE]

Thoughts - Jesus is the cornerstone, prophesied by Isaiah, but the builders rejected him. Have we ever felt rejected, either for our faith or because of any other issue? If so, come to the Lord in prayer, seeking His peace.
There are many layers of meaning in the parables of Jesus. What is your response to the story of the killing of the slave and the owner's son? What are your thoughts about the owner destroying the tenants? Talk with God about those feelings and find a peace-filled answer.
