August is National Make-A-Will Month — a reminder that creating a will is essential to protect your loved ones, control your assets, and reduce family conflict, regardless of your age, income, or health.

Why Should You Make a Will?

1. It protects your loved ones and assets.
Without a will, state laws determine how your property is distributed, which may not reflect your wishes. A will lets you decide who inherits your money, real estate, personal belongings, and even sentimental items. It also allows you to name guardians for minor or disabled children, ensuring they are cared for by someone you trust.

2. It reduces family conflict.
A clear, legally binding will minimizes confusion and disputes during a difficult time. It provides direct instructions, helping avoid misunderstandings and arguments, especially in blended families or complex estates.

3. It gives you control over your legacy.
You can leave meaningful gifts, donate to charities, or support causes you care about. You can also name an executor to handle your affairs efficiently and in accordance with the law.

4. It is not just for the wealthy.
Many people believe wills are only for those with large estates, but they are important for everyone. Even modest assets — like a home, vehicles, or personal items — can be distributed according to your wishes.

5. It provides peace of mind.
Having a will in place means your family won’t have to guess what you would have wanted. It can also include provisions for pets, ensuring they are cared for after you pass.

Why August Matters?

The month of August provides an opportunity to take the first step toward ensuring your wishes are honored and your loved ones are protected, no matter the size of your estate.

If you already have a will, review it during August to ensure it reflects your current wishes, especially after major life events like marriage, divorce, or the birth of a child.

Beginning in June 2022, the new (at the time) Blue Springs Cemetery leadership communicated changes in burial procedures, contacts, etc. to all local area funeral homes who had buried individuals in the cemetery. These communications have occurred via regular mail, email, and telephone. A current copy of that communication as of May 2026 is below. Since we have seen posts where past leaders of the cemetery are being bothered by continued contacts, we will re-communicate to all funeral homes. However, we cannot control what funeral homes do, only what we do. Please contact us by email at [email protected] or private message us here on Facebook. You may also contact Geralyn Franklin, President, at 936-371-0549 if you have any questions or need additional information.

Honoring our veterans for Memorial Day . . . Thanks to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #113 and community volunteers for putting American flags on our fence and the graves of veterans . . .

Per Maryanne Theriot from a post on Etoile Extra:

Thank you to George Gray and Sara Burnett and her husband for coming out and helping place flags on the fence line and the graves of our veterans at Blue Springs Cemetery. Your help was greatly appreciated. Thank you again.

REMINDER FOR TOMORROW, MAY 20, AT 7:30 AM:

Maryanne Theriot shared this notice in Etoile Extra last week so we wanted to remind you.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #113 will be at Blue Springs Cemetery on May 20, 2026 at 7:30 am to put flags on the graves of our veterans. This was a favorite project of Juice. She always made sure we had lots of help. We would appreciate any of you in Etoile coming out to help. We put the flags on the graves and decorate the fence line. Just show up. We supply the flags. We just need the help. Hope to see you there!

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED! This is a wonderful tradition to honor our veterans!
