St. Patrick (c. 390–460) was a 5th-century Christian missionary and bishop, honored as the patron saint and “Apostle of Ireland.” Captured by Irish pirates as a teenager, he endured six years of slavery before escaping, later returning to Ireland as a bishop to spread Christianity. He is remembered for using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity and for the legends of driving snakes from Ireland. His writings include an autobiographical Confession and the prayer known as St. Patrick’s Breastplate; Hymn 370 in The Hymnal 1982 is attributed to him. In the Episcopal Church, St. Patrick is commemorated on March 17.
