indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die.” — Romans 5:7
I have often thought that I could give my life for someone very close to me. In that situation, my death would feel like a noble sacrifice, especially if the life saved went on to serve other noble purposes. That would be my hope.
Jesus gave his life for many people who were unworthy, with the hope that our lives would make a difference in the world. There is no guarantee that we will always act with such nobility, but God’s hope is greater than ours. God’s hope is infused with love through the Holy Spirit.
Saint Paul reminds us in Romans 5:5, “Hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”
This shows how important faith, hope, and love are in our lives. It also shows how important the Holy Spirit is. When we open ourselves to the Spirit, faith, hope, and love can move humanity toward noble causes.
