Donated Food Arrives at Vermont Food Bank to Commemorate US Semiquincentennial/250th Anniversary!
As part of its observance of America’s 250th anniversary, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is donating a large shipment of shelf-stable food to families in need in Vermont. The shipment will arrive at Vermont Food Bank in Barre on Thursday, May 28, at about 11 a.m.
This delivery is part of a national collaboration initiated in November 2025, in which 250 truckloads of food will be donated to communities in all 50 states. The shipment originates in Salt Lake City, Utah, and draws from the church’s humanitarian resources. About 15,000 pounds of shelf-stable food is expected.
The shipment aims to transform a national commemoration into local service. It will go to Vermont Food Bank in Barre, Vermont, which has a history of successful collaboration with the church. Vermont Food Bank will coordinate the distribution of the food to local food shelves in the area.
“On the 250th anniversary of our country’s birth, we rejoice in the freedom to act as our Savior would,” said Erik Worthington, President of the Montpelier Vermont Stake of the church. “As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we follow His admonition to ‘Love our neighbors as ourselves.’ Feeding the hungry and lifting our community is a joyful civic duty and privilege.”
Past collaborations with Vermont Food Bank include deliveries of refrigerated dairy goods to Rutland during the pandemic and significant financial donations from the Christmas “Giving Machine” drive at the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial in South Royalton.
Another large truckload of donated supplies for area food shelves is expected in September and will be distributed in the Burlington-Essex area through the church’s Burlington congregation.
