What Would Your Life Be Like Without a Bible?
Often, we don’t realize how much something means to us until it's gone or out of reach. I found myself reflecting recently on what life would be like without the comfort and guidance of God’s Word (The Bible) to read.
History
For centuries, the Bible was written in Latin, accessible only to priests. Furthermore, handwritten manuscripts were very expensive. Throughout history, the Bible was often reserved for the wealthy or was only available in universities.
Yet, in 1381, John Wycliffe, a pioneering reformer inspired by his faith, dedicated himself to creating a full English translation that everyone could access and understand.
Johann Gutenberg’s printing press in 1455 helped mass-produce the Bible.
Today
Today, 100 million Bibles are printed globally each year, with 20 million sold annually in the United States.
Most people, whether believers or non-believers, have access to a Bible or own one or more copies.
What do Scriptures tell us about what God’s Word does for us?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, all scripture is breathed out by God for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
The Bible helps us in many ways: it teaches us about God’s standards, shows us right living, and prepares us to be helpful instruments for His work. Plus, God’s Word enriches our lives, teaches us new things, guides us, and gets us ready to follow His plans for the future.
The Bible is an inspired Word of God that moves us spiritually every time we read it, regardless of how often we encounter it.
Reflection
So, I invite you to consider: what might your life look like without God’s Word?
Take a moment to respond to this question, either by reflecting on your own or by chatting with someone else. Think about how you're engaging with God’s Word—perhaps it's time to get back into daily reading, or maybe you could invite a friend to join you on this meaningful journey.
Finally, I leave you with Psalm 119:105, Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
