đ„Is prophecy for today?đ„đ€·ââïž
The disciple of Apostle Johnâs disciple Polycarp, Irenaeus of Lyons, sure thought so. I attached some pages from his book âThe Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching,â written around 150 AD. This last page plainly states those who do not receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit cannot be serviceable to God, highlighting the gift of prophecy. Please hang with me a second.
Prophecy was demonstrated by Jesus through âwords of knowledgeâ and predictions of the future, and through revealing Godâs heart/intentions/truths in the scriptures. He also declared the Word of the Lord as led by the Holy Spirit.
1 example of âWords of knowledgeâ demonstrated by Jesus with the âwoman at the wellâ as Jesus told her she has had 5 husbands and is living with a man she isnât married to.
Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 12:8 (NIV): "To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, but to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit".
1 Corinthians 14: 24 -25 âBut if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, âGod is really among you!â
Last week as I was putting groceries in my car a lady came up to me and said, âI think you prayed for my husband a year ago at Meijer.â I had asked him if he had issues with his left kidney. They said, âNot that they knew of,â but said there were issues running down his hip/leg area on that side. Even though I thought I heard wrong we prayed and I encouraged them in the Lord and left. As my #1 goal is to love people and point to Jesus. She then shared they found out 2 months later he had cancer in the kidneys. She kept saying âyou knewâ through tears. Her husband came over and we talked for about an hour and we prayed for healing. I will wait for a report. (I will discuss healing in a different post.)
One of the first questions she asked was how did you knowâŠ. Was it a dead relative or something. Which I responded NOOO đ Anybody who has been around me would know Iâm outspoken against that. I responded, âJesus said, âMy sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.ââ I explained you do have to be careful because there are things that are demonic and real, including talking talking to dead people (scripture prohibits) which are actually demons. I explained when it reveals Christ and points to him you see the evidence of what is really from the Holy Spirit. She excitedly exclaimed, âIt has!â They have started going to church regularly and her husband is reading through the Bible for the first time. Which I explained why to start in the New Testament so you can understand the Old Testament through the lens of Christ. We talked about all Jesus accomplished on the cross for them, new life led by the Holy Spirit, and how to have intimacy with God. We have been in touch since.
This all started with being willing to deliver a message from God. Also known as âprophecy.â He reveals Himself and does the hard-work, I just get the privilege to be the messenger. It sure does impact people way differently than handing them a pamphlet. After all Jesus told us to GO and do, and to simply believe He is in us and will move through us. He is the one doing the heavy lifting.
Paul instructs us to âeagerly desire spiritual gifts.â Especially the gift of prophecy. 1 Corinthians 12:31 & 1 Corinthians 14:1 (read the full chapters for context). He also gives us instructions on how to deliver prophecy within a church service, and how to weigh out together if itâs from God. Notice he does not say take the person out back and stone them if they are wrong. đ I have heard a pastor reference that belief in regard to prophecy as if it still applied. Thank the Lord for His mercy and grace because I have been dead wrong. Nobody has thrown a stone yet. I use it as a learning opportunity to get with the Lord and back into the flow of the Holy Spirit and out of my own mind. It takes humility, faith, and trust to step out and be wrong. I want to grow in hearing the voice of my Father in heaven, and through prayer and stepping out in faith I am learning to discern His voice.
Scripture also instructs us to prophecy in proportion to our faith. My friend JonMark Baker has had some amazingly detailed âwords of knowledge.â I know of several people who have been blessed as it brought freedom, feeling seen by God, healing to their heart and even healing to the body.
Now the bad side of prophecy. Donât believe the people prophesying Christâs return. Itâs hogwash! At best they are prophesying from their own mind. At worst they are deceptive and leading people astray. Prophets like Mohammed (Muslim founder), Joseph Smith Jr. (Morman founder) and other religions that are anti-scriptural is not of the Holy Spirit. It is an anti-Christ spirit.
Why have we allowed fear to keep us from desiring prophecy? As Irenaeus says, the spiritual gifts are crucial to have a healthy church. There needs to be order, accountability, and correction but some have labeled all of it demonic. This is dangerous too. There needs to be balance, belief, and trust in the Holy Spirit.
Hebrews 5:14
âBut solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.â
We arenât supposed to âgo to churchâ we are supposed to become her. Made in the image of Christ. In love, character, righteousness, and yes even worksâŠ.following our lord as surrendered servants. The gifts are meant to be a blessing and a tool within the body of Christ. Marking the Holy Spirits work within His people. Pointing to the love and heart of our Father in heaven. They are meant to follow the Gospel message as proof of His Kingdom come.
I will share a couple of videos in the comments.
1) An example of a word of knowledge
2) A powerful sermon where a prophetic word is given to the church and weighed out in front of everyone.
