Merry Michaelmas!
This coming monday is the Christian Holiday of Michaelmas. While largely forgotten in the modern world, this was a very important holiday for medieval and early modern Christians.
The Feast of St Michael commemorates all of the Archangels, but in particular St. Michael.
Some Michaelmas traditions include cooking a goose on Michaelmas and stopping all blackberry picking. Why do we not pick blackberries after Michaelmas? According to Medieval legend, when St. Michael kicked Satan out of Heaven, he fell in a blackberry bramble. So every year after the Feast of St. Michael, the devil curses black berries. Of course this is only a medieval legend, so don’t feel guilty if you continue to eat black berries.

September 14 is remembered as the Feast of the Holy Cross in the Episcopal Church. This holiday commemorates the consecration of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and the discovery of the site of Jesus’ crucifixion by St Helena in 335 AD. It’s important to remember that the Cross, once a symbol of suffering and pain, was transformed into a symbol of love and grace through Christ’s death and resurrection.
