DID YOU KNOW?

Established in 1855, the town of Epworth, Iowa, was named in honor of the birthplace of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism; reflecting the area’s Methodist heritage. Born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, John Wesley (1703–1791) was an 18th-Century Anglican priest and Theologian who led a major Evangelical Revival in England. He emphasized personal faith, holiness, and social action, establishing Methodist societies that featured structured prayer, study, and charitable work.

DID YOU KNOW?

The history of the Epworth United Methodist Church began In 1851 with pioneers from New England and Pennsylvania. Otis Briggs offered his log cabin for the first services. Early in 1853, a small frame church building was erected near the present church site. Being the only church in the area, it became the center of the community. Today, the church still stands in the center of Epworth.

Today we begin the season of Lent.

For forty days, we walk with Jesus in the wilderness - a place of testing, but also of trust.

We see his faithfulness. We see his steady confidence in the Father. And we are invited to place our own trust in him.

In a world that can feel anxious and divided, this season offers something steady: confidence not in ourselves, but in the love and grace of Jesus.

May these forty days draw us closer to him, and renew in us a quiet, resilient hope.

Now that the holidays are over, do you notice you have an overstock of plastic grocery bags?

Our backpack ministry provides food bags to around 100 students, weekly. If you have extra bags you’d like to donate, please drop-off at the church. If you’re able to double-check for holes / receipts, that helps make our packing days go smoothly.

May God bless you this week! 🌟

This past Sunday, the Demmer / Boal families lit the Candle of Love, representing the ultimate love of God that He might send His only Son for us, which is made apparent in the birth of his Son.

TONIGHT, we light the Christ Candle, the heart of the Advent wreath—the moment when waiting turns into fulfillment. All the earth has been longing and hoping for light, and in Christ, that deep waiting is finally answered.

In a world marked by uncertainty, division, and weariness, this flame shines as a powerful reminder: God’s promise has arrived. Jesus is the Light who breaks through darkness, restores what is broken, and brings hope not only to our hearts but to all creation.

We hope you can join us this Christmas Eve for our candlelight service at 6:30pm. 💙
