Established in 1855, the town of Epworth, Iowa, was named in honor of the birthplace of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism; reflecting the area’s Methodist heritage. Born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, John Wesley (1703–1791) was an 18th-Century Anglican priest and Theologian who led a major Evangelical Revival in England. He emphasized personal faith, holiness, and social action, establishing Methodist societies that featured structured prayer, study, and charitable work.
