TESTED: What Does God See in Our Hearts?

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:1–8

We can know the Scriptures, understand God's commandments, and proclaim the truth of the gospel. But does what we know align with how we live?

The Apostle Paul reminds us that God examines our hearts. He knows our motives, our intentions, and the sincerity of our faith. Jesus commands us to love God and love our neighbors, but knowing the commandment and living it are not always the same.

Here is the Good News: Because of the cross of Jesus Christ, we no longer have to remain the people we once were!

Through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, God is bringing our hearts into alignment with His Word. Faith, hope, and love become more than things we profess; they become the evidence of God's grace working within us.

The question is not whether we have already achieved perfection, but whether we are surrendering ourselves to the One who makes us new.

God knows who we are, but through Jesus Christ, He is transforming who we are becoming.

WHERE WORSHIP ENDS, WITNESS BEGINS

1 Thessalonians 1:1–10

What happens when Sunday worship is over?

In his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul describes a church whose faith was more than something they professed. It was something they lived. Their faith produced work, their love inspired labor, and their hope in Jesus Christ gave them endurance.

The gospel did not merely reach their ears. It transformed their lives.

And that transformation became a testimony. Their faith became known far beyond the walls of their gathering.

The same calling rests upon the Church today.

We gather to worship, to hear God's Word, and to be strengthened in our faith. But we are also sent into a world that desperately needs to encounter the love and truth of Jesus Christ.

If our faith is genuine, there should be evidence of it beyond Sunday morning.

Join us at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church as we explore what it means to become a people whose lives proclaim the gospel.

Where worship ends, witness begins.

🏆 Trophies and Stones 🪨

Some things in our past make us proud. Other things we wish we could forget.

The Apostle Paul had both.

He had an impressive résumé—heritage, education, religious devotion, and accomplishments. He also had a past that included standing by while Stephen was stoned and approving the persecution of Christians.

Yet Paul wrote:

“This one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal…”
—Philippians 3:13–14

Paul had not yet laid hold of the prize, but he had laid hold of one thing: he would not live looking backward.

Behind him were trophies.

Behind him were stones.

Ahead of him was Christ.

Sometimes life feels like a line moving in the wrong direction.

Plans fall apart. Doors close. Loss comes. The future becomes uncertain. And when trouble comes, our instinct is often to fall back into a defensive position—to protect ourselves, turn inward, and simply survive.

But Philippians 2 shows us something remarkable.

The path of Jesus went down—self-emptying, servanthood, humility, obedience, and finally death on a cross.

Yet God was not idle.

The cross reminds us that we cannot judge whether God is working simply by the direction our circumstances are moving.

**Down doesn’t mean done.**

Christian hope is more than optimism. Optimism says, “I think things will get better.” Hope trusts the promises of God even when we cannot yet see what God is doing.

Join us this Sunday at Wesley Chapel as we hear the good news of Philippians 2:1–13:

**Because of what God did in Jesus, God now works in us.**
