Mendelssohn & R. Strauss: A Journey to Playfulness
Sunday Sept 20th 5 PM

opens its 2026–27 season with wit, brilliance, and mischievous joy. The program moves from Cole Reyes’s world premiere Circular Reasoning and Mendelssohn’s youthful Violin Concerto in D minor to Barber’s vivid Capricorn Concerto and Texu Kim’s new arrangement of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The evening concludes with Reyes’s chamber orchestra arrangement of Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel, bringing the work’s satirical pranks into vivid, intimate focus.

School’s back. The kids are free.

And this Labor Day weekend, Rich preached the sermon that reframed how we think about community, conflict, and what it means to actually stay.

Most of us were never taught conflict resolution. We were taught to keep the peace. Smile through it. Move on. Pretend it didn’t happen.

Matthew 18 says something different. It says go. Speak up. Do it privately first. Do it fairly. Do it with witnesses if you have to.

Because silence doesn’t protect community. It just lets the tension build underground until it breaks what was built.

Rich quoted Kwame Christian: “It’s not me versus you. It’s you and me versus the problem.” And the room went quiet.

That’s what real community looks like. Not a place where everyone agrees. A place where disagreement is handled with enough respect that people actually want to stay.

At FPCE we believe inclusion has a spine. We welcome everyone. And we protect the vulnerable. Because a community that tolerates wolves eventually loses its sheep.

Vacation Bible Camp is a highlight of our church year. And this is why.

Anita and Vernon’s designs that made kids walk in and gasp. Felicia and her crew running a week that took hundreds of hours of planning, communication, and dedication to pull off. A kitchen crew that never stopped. Adults in yellow t-shirts dancing like nobody was watching (everybody was watching).

The new friendships. The kids who found their people this week. That is what a community like this does. It creates bonds that last way beyond one week in August.

Pastor Rich says good memories of church matter — that they shape whether our kids seek out faith when they grow up. This week, we made memories that will last.

To every volunteer, every kitchen crew member, every decorator, every teacher — thank you. Every child in that room felt it.

VBC 2026. This week had everything.

A final concert where four songs turned into the loudest, most joyful thing we’ve heard all year. Every child singing. Every adult joining in. The kind of moment that makes all the early mornings worth it.

One thing we love - watching the little campers come leaders when they grow old enough and then guiding the next group of campers over a week of VBC. Guiding the little ones. Staying close to them. Showing them what it looks like to be safe and loved in this place.

That is what this community has been building, year after year.

As Pastor Rich says: good memories of church matter. They shape who we become.

We made some beautiful ones this week. 💛
