Where is your line?
What is that one thing in your life, in your work, in your relationships, in your speech, that you will not surrender & bow down to, no matter the cost.
Because the truth is, that every one of us is being asked to bow to something. And that decision to cave into the the desires of the flesh or the pressure of people, will press you — quietly and persistently — in an effort to hand over something, that belongs to God.
As we began Esther 3, we encounter Mordecai’s resolute decision to honor God and his refusal to cave into the pressure to bow to a man who was known to be an enemy of God’s people. Haman was an Agagite and decendent of Amalek – a group of people who previosuly attacked and preyed on the weak and feeble of Israel. And although Mordecai was surrounded by a courtyard full of people who quickly bowed to this man, he took a stand against the pressure to conform to the ways the crowd had responded.
And yet this would not be the only time Mordecai would have to face this pressure. Day after day, the same officials would ask the same question: “Why do you have to be like this, Mordecai? Just bow… It is just a gesture…. Everyone else does it… What is wrong with you?” But even in the midst of persitant pressure, Mordecai could continue to stand in that courtyard, because of the decision that had already been made.
He did not arrive at the king’s gate morning after morning and improvise his convictions on the spot. He had settled, long before the pressure ever came, what he would not surrender. The public stance in the crisis was the fruit of a private allegiance decided in advance.
Jesus too, was taken to a high place by a great enemy. Being shown all the kingdoms and all the glory of the world, the enemy said to Him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Every kingdom. All the glory. At the cost of one bow. Yet Jesus refused & chose the cross that saved & freed us.
In light of these examples, decide your line now, while it is quiet, so that when the pressure does come, your feet are already planted.
And then — like Mordecai, like the Lord Jesus Himself — STAND.
