PRIDE: It doesn’t come with a loud announcement – rather it comes with a whisper that says – “You were right, weren’t you?…”
“That person had it coming…”
“You would’ve handled this better than they did…”
“You deserve a small celebration of this little victory…”
“You’re doing just fine… it’s not your problem, it’s theirs…”

Pride comes by comparing. It exists because we are constantly measuring ourselves against other people—and the moment we discover we come out ahead, even in the smallest thing, we do as Haman and the King did, and “lift the cup”.

In Esther 3, while the couriers went running out of the palace, with the order to mass murder the Jews, and as the streets of Susa were filling up with people reading this proclamation in shock, inside the palace, were two men who sat down to drink and toast their accomplishment. Absolutely no concern about how any of this was affecting the people.

And this is what pride looks like at the moment of its triumph: It celebrates. It drinks. And it cannot hear the city crying out beneath its windows. The deepest and most terrible thing about pride is that it deafens us. It convinces us that the harm we are doing to other people is not really happening… OR if it is happening, it is not really our problem… OR if it is our problem, we excuse it because we believe we deserve the celebratory drink after all we have been through.

So too, we have a decision to make daily. There are two cups before us, that can be reached for:
(1) The cup Haman drank.
(2) The cup Christ drank.

The cup that toasts itself, OR the cup that pours itself out.

This week, when you catch yourself reaching for a small toast of self accomplishment over someone else — or find a spark of celebration when a person you had written off fails, or the running commentary begins to applaud your superiority — pause. Notice what you were about to drink and put the cup of Hamen’s pride down. Pick up the cup of Christ - the one that pours itself out.

Ask God to humble you and help you trust Him completely.

Where is your line?

What is that one thing in your life, in your work, in your relationships, in your speech, that you will not surrender & bow down to, no matter the cost.

Because the truth is, that every one of us is being asked to bow to something. And that decision to cave into the the desires of the flesh or the pressure of people, will press you — quietly and persistently — in an effort to hand over something, that belongs to God.

As we began Esther 3, we encounter Mordecai’s resolute decision to honor God and his refusal to cave into the pressure to bow to a man who was known to be an enemy of God’s people. Haman was an Agagite and decendent of Amalek – a group of people who previosuly attacked and preyed on the weak and feeble of Israel. And although Mordecai was surrounded by a courtyard full of people who quickly bowed to this man, he took a stand against the pressure to conform to the ways the crowd had responded.

And yet this would not be the only time Mordecai would have to face this pressure. Day after day, the same officials would ask the same question: “Why do you have to be like this, Mordecai? Just bow… It is just a gesture…. Everyone else does it… What is wrong with you?” But even in the midst of persitant pressure, Mordecai could continue to stand in that courtyard, because of the decision that had already been made.

He did not arrive at the king’s gate morning after morning and improvise his convictions on the spot. He had settled, long before the pressure ever came, what he would not surrender. The public stance in the crisis was the fruit of a private allegiance decided in advance.

Jesus too, was taken to a high place by a great enemy. Being shown all the kingdoms and all the glory of the world, the enemy said to Him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Every kingdom. All the glory. At the cost of one bow. Yet Jesus refused & chose the cross that saved & freed us.

In light of these examples, decide your line now, while it is quiet, so that when the pressure does come, your feet are already planted.

And then — like Mordecai, like the Lord Jesus Himself — STAND.

If you’re more concerned about how much others notice you and your good deeds and faithfulness, your motive may be a problem.

May we be found doing the right thing, not for any audience or applause, but for God alone.
