August 28th is our Patronal Feast Day, the Dormition of the Mother of God. This great Feast of the Church celebrates a fundamental teaching of our faith—the Resurrection of the body. In the case of the Theotokos, this has been accomplished by the divine will of God. Thus, this Feast is a feast of hope, hope in Resurrection and life eternal. Like those who gathered around the body of the Virgin Mary, we gather around our departed loved ones and commend their souls into the hands of Christ. As we remember those who have reposed in the faith before us and have passed on into the communion of the Saints, we prepare ourselves to one day be received into the new life of the age to come. We also affirm through this Feast as we journey toward our heavenly abode that the Mother of God intercedes for us. Through Christ she has become the mother of all of the children of God, embracing us with divine love.

On the Feast of St. Elias, it is a tradition of the Church to bless cars. St. Elias, Pillar of the Prophets, pray to God for us! “The incarnate Angel, the Cornerstone of the Prophets, the second Forerunner of the Coming of Christ, the glorious Elias (Elijah), who from above, sent down to Elisha the grace to dispel sickness and cleanse lepers, abounds therefore in healing for those who honor him.”

It was a weekend full of celebration and joy. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, on Saturday, we celebrated liturgy at St. Michael’s in Binghamton. Following the liturgy, Fr. Alex and Fr. Jim served a panachida for the immigrants in our parishioners’ families—those that first came to America. On Sunday, after liturgy, we processed to our flag monument, where we prayed a moleben, giving thanks to God and asking Him to protect our country. Happy 250th to all!

Our Lord tells us that whatever we do for the least of these, we do for Him. It is the task of the Church, according to St. Symeon the New Theologian, to be the hands and feet of the Lord. Thus, in response to the tragic fire at the Knights Inn in Endwell, our parish took donations and organized items to help the displaced. It is not enough to pray for those in need. We must also reach out and serve them.
