It’s not always easy to visit the cemetery in person, but your loved ones are always in your heart. If you are unable to make it out this Memorial Day, we are here to help you honor their memory.

Today, on Veterans Day, we’re reminded how special it is to live in Emporia, Kansas — the Founding City of Veterans Day. Our community has a proud history of honoring those who served, and we continue that tradition through Wreaths Across America.

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery will host our annual Wreaths Across America - Maplewood Memorial Lawn ceremony and wreath placement to remember and honor our veterans.

Under the local leadership of Scott Burenheide, volunteers, families, and community members will come together to place wreaths on the graves of those who served — ensuring their names are spoken and their sacrifices never forgotten.

On Veterans Day 2024, we at Maplewood Memorial Lawn were deeply honored to be entrusted with the sacred duty of committing Sgt. John Herrick to rest, a long-awaited tribute to his bravery. Over 80 years ago, Sgt. Herrick sacrificed everything in service of his country and the freedoms for which we hold dear. Now, as we welcome him home through his repatriation and commitment in these hallowed grounds, we express our heartfelt gratitude for his service.

Sergeant John Owen Herrick, United States Army, of Emporia, Kansas, was killed in action on June 6, 1944, off the coast of Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. He was 19 years old. John was born on November 11, 1924, in Elmdale, Kansas, the son of Carl Addison and Zola Love

We are honored to be hosting this wonderful tribute to our veterans today. Many thanks to Scott and his team with Wreaths Across America - Maplewood Memorial Lawn.

Today is National Wreaths Across America Day. Emporia will be honoring our local heroes at Maplewood Memorial Lawn cemetery promptly at 11:00 a.m. There will be a ceremony honoring all veterans and a presentation to honor each military branch.
