Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition (STIC)

Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition (STIC) STIC is the voice of interfaith harmony and tolerance in Chemung, Steuben, and Schuyler Counties.

Are you looking for a group of people with which to broaden your global faith perspective? Have you ever thought that the Southern Tier is too small to have such an organization? Let us introduce STIC – the Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition – a determined group of individuals who plan and create programs and activities that educate and inspire. We are committed to greater understanding, trust, op

en conversation and community building. We believe that all faith traditions have a stake in the future of the Chemung Valley, and that by working together we will reach wiser and more compassionate decisions. If you are someone who seeks inclusion rather than dogmatism, we would like to meet you! Over the years, STIC has:
- designed “Walking Together,” curriculum to foster respect for religious diversity among children and families,
- organized social events around national and religious holidays such as Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Hanukkah and Christmas,
- responded compassionately to societal events such as a memorial service for Matthew Shepard, a young man murdered because of his sexual orientation; helping to clean anti-Semitic graffiti from the Jewish Community Center; and supporting our Muslim friends at the Islamic Center of the Finger Lakes following the September 11th attacks,
- sponsored dozens of lectures, musical programs, art exhibitions and workshops dedicated to understanding faith perspectives, dispelling misinformation, promoting peacemaking and fostering environmental stewardship,
- assisted college students so they could attend seminars and participate with national and international leaders in the field of interfaith studies.

07/20/2024

We, the members of the Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition, are saddened and alarmed by the ongoing sectarian violence in Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank, especially the terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the subsequent Israeli invasion of Gaza. We recognize the tragic loss of life, the risk that the conflict will widen, and the trauma the conflict has caused to diaspora communities.

Therefore we, the members of the Southern Tier Interfaith Coalition, call on all parties in the conflict to cease hostilities, to release all wrongfully detained individuals, and to provide humanitarian aid to those displaced by the conflict.

We call on the international community to pursue a just peace in the region, recognizing the basic human rights and right to self-determination for all peoples, and to cease or suspend the sale or supply of weapons to all combatants.

We call on the international community to investigate crimes against humanity, including war crimes, genocide, and ethnic cleansing, committed by nation-states, their irregular military and civilian proxies, and individuals.

We offer our prayers and meditations, each according to our own custom, for peace, healing, and justice, this day and always.
