Wednesday 3:30pm Devotion - Elma UMC, Elma NY

Greetings Friends,
There is no time to post a recorded devotion today. Having just returned from an intensive for my Doctor of Ministry program, I am catching up with other church work that must take priority. This passage of Scripture comes from last week's Bible Challenge readings. Micah contains some of the most well-known Scripture verses in the Hebrew Bible, as Christians read those precious words. And this week's reading comes from Deuteronomy; also chock full of well-known verses, including the other version of the Ten Commandments, and strong admonishments to teach God's commandments, and the story (history) of our faith to our children so they will live good, holy lives with God and pass life in God on to their children for all generations. That is where true peace comes from, not something that can be created by human will, but that we are invited to participate in by God. Let us reflect on these things this week, and pray for the assurance of God's saving grace for all. Blessings! Pastor Lisa

Wednesday 3:30pm Devotion - Elma UMC, Elma NY
Greetings Friends,
No video today. I have a nasty cold and so I am offering you this written message from the editors of the Wesley Study Bible about the Witness of the Spirit. I pray you will be blessed and go forth to bless others as you discern God's will for your life today by the Holy Spirit bearing witness with your spirit that you are being Spirit-led.

In Sermon 10: "Witness of the Spirit," John Wesley echoes Romans 8:16: "It is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God." This statement appears repeatedly in Wesley's writings. Drawing from his own spiritual experience, Wesley placed considerable emphasis upon an individual's experience of assurance of the forgiveness of sins. The witness of the Spirit to an individual's spirit confirmed one's acceptance as a child of God. Wesley's emphasis upon experience added a significant dimension to the resources of Scripture, tradition, and reason used by Christians in the Church of England to discern matters of faith and life. Wesley greatly appreciated the experience of living in the presence of God and came to value the spiritual senses alongside the physical senses. For Wesley, the witness of the Spirit described a personal experience of the divine and served as an important resource for discerning matters of faith and truth.
