Last Sunday we began our series from 2 Peter, where we looked at the overview of the book as well as the first two verses.
Be sure to join us this Sunday as we continue in this great book, verse by verse, focusing on the truth of scripture.
In case you missed last week or maybe forgot, here are some of the notes from the sermon. -
Peter's concern for the believers is that they would not be led astray, but rather grow and learn and become strong believers.
He does this, not by introducing new doctrine, but rather reminding them of the truth they needed to remain in.
And this is a reminder to us, the truths we need to learn and grow in, are the same truths that have been taught for many years.
We need to see a red flag if someone is claiming "never before seen truth from the Bible".
The truth of the Bible has not changed, the truth we need reminded of is not new, it is timeless.
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, addressing this in that his book on 2 Peter, says, βThe business of the church and of preaching is not to present us with new and interesting ideas, it is rather to go on reminding us of certain fundamental and eternal truths.β
And this is what we see all throughout the Bible God's people being reminded of what God has already revealed.
2 Peter 1:12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.....
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen....
Our faith begins to take root and grow when we are a people devoted to the fundamental truths of God's Word.
Consistent and concise Bible truth being replayed in our lives is what brings deep roots to our faith.
Those deep roots underground, produce growth in our Christian life above ground.
Psalm 1:1 ...
2 Peter 1:1
What links us as a church one to another is our faith, our salvation.
The thing that we have in common together this morning is the fact that we are sinner, and that God has sent His son to save us.
"What unites Christians is not a shared concern about the problems of the world, not a common opposition to falsity, but a shared faith." - Begg
Peter is a servant writing to other servants united by their God who has offered them salvation based on no merit of their own.
Because there is no merit in our Salvation, we have equal standing as believers.
As Peter refers to faith as like precious faith, there is a context of equality linked to that faith.
We stand equal, we have no reason to act or higher than someone else.
Romans 12:3....
Grace and Peace come from God, they are foundational to our faith, and Peter wishes that they would be multiplied to them.
As we learn and grow in knowledge of God, grace and peace are multiplied to us.....
Our goals for this series is:
To be reminded of the basics.
To be warned against false teaching.
To have our faith strengthened and deepened.
To act upon that faith in our families, churches, and communities.
