Church History:
Lafayette United Methodist Church was built prior to 1848 on land given by Thomas Jefferson Deyerle and his wife Mildred P. It is the oldest brick church in Montgomery County and bricks for the original portion of the building were made on the church square.

The square was also used as a muster ground for troops in the Confederate Army. Also, the stile used by the ladies to mount and dismount their horses still stands in front of the church. Additions were built in 1921, 1949, and 1975. The steeple was added in 1988 and a replica of the old belfry on the original building was added at the same time. The Lafayette Historic District was designated by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1989 and a plaque was presented to the church in 1992. In 1991, the same area was designated a National Historic District and the church a National Historic Landmark.
