“Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow…so I was afraid…and hid your talent…” (Mt 25:24-25)
Your view of the Master is life shaping. In the Parable of the Talents, the servant who was worthless to his Master - who was ruled by his own wickedness - was so because of his view of the Master. In his judgement, the Master was hard, unfair, and unworthy.
Jesus originally taught this parable to his disciples about his own return. So, to his disciples, what sort of Master is Jesus?
Jesus is the Master willing to lay down his life for his servants. The Master who calls his servants “friends.” The Master who has great joy over his servants. The Master who invites his servants to share in immeasurable his riches. The Master who delights in speaking a good word over his servants. The Master who will return, his reward in hand.
Honestly, in the deep places of your heart, when you think of Jesus as the Master right now, how do you see him? Do you see him as someone hard to really love & serve? Perhaps someone who doesn't really care about you? Maybe even someone whom you hope doesn't return?
Or, when you look upon Jesus, do you find your heart stirring with love, affection, and admiration? Do you see him as someone worthy of service, sacrifice, and loyal faithfulness? Do you find yourself eager for his return?
May you be given eyes to see the glorious splendor of Jesus as you hear and contemplate the Gospel!
