What Kills the Church

What Kills the Church An adult Pastor's Kid details why she has given up on the institutionalized church while calling for accountability. The church can, and must, do better.

What Kills the Church was founded by an adult "Pastor's Kid" who formally left the United Methodist Church after being obligated to watch silently as the Conference-level Church leadership actively worked to undermine the ministry of a local pastor (her mother) and dissolve a local congregation. These founding events effectively destroyed her life-long love of the Church and trust in its mission a

nd leadership. Where she once called herself a United Methodist, she now calls herself a "Wesleyan." She now identifies as a spiritual "Follower of Christ" rather than "Christian." This page was founded to create a platform by which those, like her, who have become disillusioned with the Church may share their stories, calling the organized institution back into accountability to the very people to whom they are supposed to minister and the laity they are called to empower. In its attempts to blindly cling to archaic doctrine and the writings of religious men who wrote their human interpretation of spiritual and cultural experiences, the organized Church (regardless of denomination) has lost its way. It is losing the culture war as the "unchurched," "spiritual but not religious" and "pagan" populations become more welcoming, more accepting and more loving than those institutions which claim to honor a loving God. We believe the Church has potential- if we can first address the very serious issues which are killing it.

It’s that time of year again when so many Christians like to focus on a non-issue (the nonexistent “War on Christmas”) instead of the things that really matter. What do you wish they would focus on instead?

This time of year sparks debates about the 'War on Christmas' – a supposed attempt to keep Christians from celebrating their holiday. This comic flips the script to show what's really going on.

The Church has an awful track record on supporting victims of s*xual assault and abuse. If anything, organized religion is best known for renewing the trauma and fostering an environment which allows it to continue and progress for victims while sheltering and enabling abusers.

is a reminder that religious communities can dole out s*xual torture just as much, if not more, than the entertainment industry.

How do you feel about this story?

"Runkles has made the choice to carry her baby to term, and lost the respect and support of the community she's devoted so much time and energy to. Though Runkles might not see it this way, to many, her situation points out the hypocrisy of so many anti-choicers: they believe in life at all costs, but not in supporting a mother and child. To some, it feels like they'll protect your fetus, but not you."

Note: The boyfriend doesn't attend her school, but if he did, do you think he would be treated the same way?

This situation gets really complicated.

Christianity tells us lots of things about love, s*x and marriage- and many of them can harmful in implementation, especially if taken as absolutes. What would you include on your list?

Wow, this is really bad advice. Does the Christian church's monopoly on Western conversations on s*x and marriage mean you've been subject to it?

Because, in light of current events in the United States, this needs to be addressed.

What kills the Church? Forcing others to abide by (or teach!) your personally held religious-based beliefs.

There is religion. There is tradition. There is faith. There is fact. All four exist and are distinctly different... unfortunately, most people can't distinguish between them.

What kills the church? Misogyny.

The Scriptures are texts written and compiled by men inspired by their experience of faith, religion, and Divinity. Their understanding of those things were through the lens of their own cultural and religious bias which greatly influenced societal power structures which benefited them.

Dress modestly because men are too weak. Also men are in charge of you because they are spiritually superior

What kills the church? Being grossly out of touch with the plight of others in the world... and reality. Yes, there are times in history when Christians have been legitimately persecuted. There are places in the world where it is still commonplace. But in the majority of the world today, Christians suffer most from their own delusions (of persecution) while enjoying long-held privileges they actively deny others.

A new study suggests different groups of Americans see their country in radically divergent ways.

What kills the church? Pro-birth positions and anti-life policies. One cannot claim with any credibility to be "Pro-life" only up to birth while supporting anti-life (and quality of life) policies, positions and values for living, breathing, suffering humans already here.

"Texas state Representative Tony Tinderholt hoped to put women in jail and take away their voting rights if they had an abortion. In an interview with the Texas Observer, the Republican lawmaker explained that women need to know there are 'repercussions' for their actions. 'Right now, it’s real easy,' Tinderholt said. “Right now, they don’t make it important to be personally responsible because they know that they have a backup of ‘oh, I can just go get an abortion.’ ...

"Under this bill, there would no longer be any exception for women who are abused, r***d or have fetal abnormalities. If a teen is r***d by her father she would be forced to carry the child under this law under penalty of jail. Tinderholt explains that the women should be forced to carry the child because he’s 'a firm believer that God creates children in his own image, regardless of how that child is brought into the world, it’s created in his image, and how can someone want to destroy that?'”

-----> Anti-choice legislation has nothing to do with "saving the babies" because they are "created in God's image." It's about patriarchy controlling women's -- never men's --s*xuality. It's about imposing one's own religious beliefs on others who may not believe the same things. It's about giving another person or persons agency over a woman's body, giving her less autonomy than a man. In fact, she would have more rights to make decisions regarding her own body as a co**se.

What kills the church?

Trying to use religion as a weapon to force others to live by your own religious values and tenants- regardless of whether or not they choose to share those religious convictions.

Contrary to popular Christian propaganda in the United States, the USA was not founded by Christian believers who all wanted the country to be based on Christian ideals. There were some who held that view- but they were not the majority. This is why we are supposed to have a separation of Church and State. And, equally important, to make that claim is disrespectful to the faith and spiritual traditions of the First Nations who called this land home long before the colonists invaded.
