Join us for this special, in-person lecture with Architectural Historian, Emily Cooperman PhD!

In 1961, when Penn's new medical laboratories were under construction, the Museum of Modern Art in New York honored them with a special exhibition. Not since MoMA exhibited Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in 1938 had a single American building received such an honor, and the curators declared that the rugged design by Philadelphian Louis Kahn was "possibly the most significant example of post-war architecture in the United States." Their judgment was right. The Richards and Goddard buildings demonstrated convincingly that modern buildings could be more than generic boxes, and that changed the history of architecture.

Emily T. Cooperman is an architectural and landscape historian and historic preservation consultant in practice for over 35 years. She holds an M.S. in Historic Preservation and Ph.D. in the History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania, and serves as the Preservation Director for the Beth Sholom Preservation Foundation. She has authored numerous successful nominations to the National Register for buildings and historic districts as well as National Historic Landmark listings. She authored the landmark nomination for Beth Sholom Synagogue and several other modernist masterpieces, including the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan (with Preservation Design Partners). Her National Historic Landmark nomination for the Richards and Goddard Laboratory Buildings at the University of Pennsylvania achieved the first such designation for a design by the great American modern architect and Philadelphia native, Louis I. Kahn.
