St. Thomas More Parish Church

St. Thomas More Parish Church St. Thomas More Parish Church is an all embracing parish community located in Elkins Park, PA. Mass

Thomas More Parish Church is an all embracing parish community. . Thomas More is a faith community in the Catholic tradition which embraces all into full participation in the sacramental life of the church. We are a viable option for those seeking to feel at home in a valid Catholic community which strives to teach and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We try to fulfill Christ’s admonition to love

one another as God loves us. We are serious about making a difference in our world, and to that end make all of the sacraments of the Church available to all who ask. Our theology is informed by our belief that the Holy Spirit is calling us to participate in the re-creation and renewal of the Catholic Church. We trust that God has called us into existence to be a healing presence to those who feel that the Church has left them, and we welcome all to come home to a faith that lives and works in and through the People of God. Thomas More is a place for Contemporary Catholics, seeking to learn about God and God’s will, to reach out and share what they have learned and experienced. Our parish is guided by the inspired work of Vatican Council II, as we are ever mindful of the Council’s call to have the Church be the living Body of Christ in our world. We invite you to come and see what being an independent Catholic is all about.

Reverend Phyllis M McHugh Obituary

Reverend Phyllis Marie (Brown) McHugh, Pastor Emeritus, St. Thomas More Parish, Elkins Park, passed away on December 28th, 2025, at the age of 76. A life-long resident of Philadelphia, Phyllis was a graduate of Holy Family College and she received her Master of Divinity degree from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.

In her lifetime, Phyllis was fiercely devoted to her faith and her family. Whether it was doting on her grandsons, ministering to her parish, enjoying music or reading one of her many books, she was a woman of remarkable strength and spirit. Her kind nature, warmth, and love will be cherished by all who knew her.

Phyllis is survived by her loving Husband of 47 years, Chris McHugh; her son Christopher; her grandchildren Christopher & Connor; and her sister Joanne Pimble. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph & Rita Brown, and her brother Robert Brown.

It is with a heavy heart and we announce the passing of our founding pastor, Mother Phyllis McHugh. Mother Phyllis passed away this morning after a brief illness. Her loving husband Chris and her son Christopher were by her side.

Although Mother Phyllis had to step aside from her pastoral duties due to health reasons, she was still actively involved in helping Fr. Shaun pastor the people of St. Thomas More and run the parish. Her warm and inviting smile and wonderful laugh will surely be missed. Fr. Shaun, Bishop Joseph and Bishop Bill offer their condolences and prayers for Mother Phyllis and her family and friends.

As of now, funeral arrangements are not yet finalized, but once they are they will be posted on the St. Thomas More page. Please keep Mother Phyllis and her family in your prayers.

Saint Paul reminds us in his First Letter to the Thessalonians, “We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Thes. 4:13-14)

May the soul of Mother Phyllis McHugh rest in peace.
