The Congregational Church has been in Elkhart since 1844. At that time, it shared facilities and the name with a Presbyterian church. In 1871, it took on its own

identity as the First Congregational Church. Since 1957, it has been part of the United Church of Christ when that denomination was formed. Throughout that time, it has always been a "family of faith." There is a lot of history in this church, but the most important part to many is the family aspect of the church. Family means that all are accepted in spite of foibles and faults. It does not mean that there aren't family squabbles and occasional problems, but for the most part, the church has pulled together for the greater good--staying always focused on "the main thing"--Jesus our Christ. The past year or more has seen considerable change and growth in our attendance and membership. If you are looking for a church home, come worship with us!

Here is a prayer for this coming Sunday, inspired by Luke 4:18-19.

Gracious and loving God, we gather in the spirit of your Jesus, who came to bring good news to those who hunger for hope, to proclaim freedom for those bound by fear, to restore sight to those who cannot see the way forward, and to lift up those who have been pressed down by the weight of injustice. Open our eyes, God, to see as you see—to recognize the dignity in every face, to notice those who have been pushed to the margins, to witness both the pain and the possibility in our midst. Where we have been blind to the suffering of others, restore our sight. Anoint us, as you anointed Jesus, to be bearers of good news in a world heavy with despair. Give us courage to reach across the divides that separate us, wisdom to build bridges where there are walls, and strength to stand with those who struggle.

Fill us with your reconciling spirit, that we might be agents of your healing love. Help us create spaces of welcome where all can find belonging, hope where fear has taken root, and community where isolation has prevailed. Guide us in the way of Jesus, who showed us that true worship cannot be separated from the work of justice and compassion. Make us instruments of your peace, vessels of your mercy, and witnesses to your transforming love.

We pray this in the name of Jesus, the Christ, who came to set us all free. Amen.

We invite you to join us this Sunday as we explore Living in the Questions. We find grace in the search for understanding and believe there is more value in questioning with an open mind and open heart, than in absolutes or dogma. We will see you on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Join us tomorrow at 11 a.m. for our sermon on Living by the Silver/Golden Rule. The Silver Rule speaks to a fundamental truth about human interconnectedness and empathy. By asking us to reflect on our own vulnerabilities and fears before acting towards others, it creates a natural bridge of understanding between self
and community. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

We invite you to join us this Sunday for our sermon on Living by the Silver/Golden Rule. Know that the way we behave towards one another and Earth is the fullest expression of what we believe, therefore we vow to walk as Jesus might have walked in this world with radical compassion, inclusion, and bravery to confront and positively change the injustices we experience as well as those we see others experiencing. We will see you at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

What does a church look like that seeks to create a truly all-inclusive community? This Sunday, in a very interactive service, we will discuss this question. We will be taking on the third Tenant of Progressive Christianity. Imagine a space that accepts those of all races, cultures, and nationalities. Consider worshiping with questioning skeptics, believers, and agnostics. Join us this Sunday as we figure it out.
