St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Elk Rapids

St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Elk Rapids St. Paul’s, the oldest Episcopal church in the region around Grand Traverse Bay, was founded on 29 August 1867.

As Episcopalians, we believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; women, men, and non-binary people serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our Church. Laypeople and clergy cooperate as leaders at all levels of our Church. Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our Church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.

Happy Pride Month! We pray that you will show up today with your whole authentic self to whatever God has planned for you. In this Church, all who are called to lead are honored for their gifts and we welcome and need those gifts as we all follow our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, together as one human family.

Please be safe tonight! We are still gathering at 5pm for Christmas Eve Eucharist at St. Paul’s; but, if it is unsafe for you to make it in, please know that Grace Traverse City will be live-streaming both a 4pm and 7pm service tonight. On Christmas morning, there will not be a service at St. Paul’s; however you are welcome to join, in person or online, at 10am as Fr. Derek leads the celebration of Christmas morning Eucharist at Grace.

Have a blessed, safe, and merry Christmas!

Otherwise, looks like an ordinary, typical Creche to me.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

St. Paul's, the oldest church in the Traverse Episcopal Deanery, was founded August 29, 1867 as the Church of the Covenant under the direction of The Rev. Henry Brown of Alpena.

In 1869 The Rev. Albert Lewis came to Elk Rapids as Rector and for 11 years held services in the county courtroom and traveled a circuit around Grand Traverse Bay by steamer. Renamed St. Paul's, the parish was admitted in union with the Diocese of Western Michigan in June 7, 1871.

In 1880 land was donated for a church building and work began on the present structure. Services have been held here continuously since Bishop George Gillespie conducted the first ones on June 21, 1885.

The handsome white board and batten structure is an exemplary expression of American Gothic church architecture. The church's style and character were carefully preserved when the building was extensively remodeled in 1995, including installation of an elevator for handicap-accessibility.
