Congregation of Alexian Brothers - Immaculate Conception Province

Congregation of Alexian Brothers - Immaculate Conception Province Religious Community of Men bound together by sacred apostolic vows & commitment to following Christ It is rooted in prayer and simple lifestyle.

The Alexian Charism is the prophetic and daring response of a faith community to the gospel of Jesus. In discipleship with Jesus, our response is reaching out to the poor, sick and dying, especially the marginated and the powerless. Our charism calls us to conversion and total self-giving in continuing the healing and reconciling mission of Jesus in collaboration with others.

How do you use the gifts God has given you to build up His Kingdom?

Each of us has been entrusted with something to share: compassion, patience, strength, a listening ear, practical skill, or the simple willingness to show up for someone in need.

The Alexian Brothers have long sought to bring Christ’s mercy to those who are suffering, forgotten, or on the margins. That same call belongs to every Christian in a unique way.

May we use what we have been given not for ourselves alone, but to make God’s Kingdom more visible in our world.

One aspect of Religious life for the Alexian Brothers is daily prayer. Alexian Brothers across the United States gather each morning and each evening at their respective houses to pray the Office of the Hours. It is these 15 to 20 minutes of morning prayer and evening prayer that are the foundation of community prayer for the Brothers.

For morning prayer its common to see Alexian Brothers in plain clothes in prayer, often reading the morning prayers in 2 groups or choirs, with groups alternating verses as the pray the Psalms. All this is to start the day right as a community, to give thanks to God and to ask for support for the day ahead.

For centuries, the Alexian Brothers have brought the healing presence of Christ to those living on the margins—the sick, the poor, and the forgotten.

Our mission is simple: to live out Christ's healing mission and build authentic relationships with those in most need.

God has given you gifts for a purpose. Are you discerning a Vocation in your life that makes use of those gifts?

Today, July 17, our Alexian Brother communities celebrate the Feast of St. Alexius, patron of the Alexian Brothers. On this special feast day Brother Terrence renewed his temporary vows!

According to ancient Christian tradition, St. Alexius was born into a wealthy Roman family but felt called to leave behind privilege, status, and comfort in order to follow Christ more completely. He gave his possessions to the poor and lived for many years as a pilgrim and beggar, devoting himself to prayer, penance, and service.

Tradition holds that Alexius eventually returned to his family home, where he lived in humility and remained unrecognized for many years. He accepted poverty, misunderstanding, and suffering without seeking praise or recognition. Only after his death was his identity discovered.

His life became a powerful witness to humility, and hidden service. These same virtues later inspired the early Alexian Brothers, who cared for the sick, buried the dead, and served those abandoned during times of plague and suffering.

Through the intercession of St. Alexius, may we learn to recognize Christ in the poor, the sick, and the forgotten, and may we answer God’s call with courage and humility.

St. Alexius, pray for us.

Brother Carl’s ministry with Catholic Charities reflects the heart of the Alexian charism: serving Christ in those who are poor, vulnerable, and in need of compassionate care.

Through prayer, community, and hands-on ministry, the Alexian Brothers continue a centuries-old mission of bringing hope and dignity to others.

This past Sunday, July 5, Br. Steve Fogt, C.F.A., was installed as the new Unit Administrator of the Alexian Brothers USA Unit. The installation was attended by the Alexian Brothers community in Milwaukee, the Brothers in Chicago, and family and friends of the community. Superior General Br. Larry Krueger, C.F.A., oversaw the installation.

We give thanks to God for Br. Steve’s willingness to serve in this new role of leadership. Please join us in praying for him, that the Holy Spirit may guide and strengthen him in his new role.

Let us also continue to pray for the Alexian Brothers.
St. Alexius, pray for us.

Brother Patrick reminds us that prayer is not only about asking for things. It is about being present with God, listening, speaking honestly, and growing in love.

How do you pray?

For the Alexian Brothers, prayer is at the heart of our life in community and service. It strengthens us to live our charism of caring for the sick, the poor, the dying, and all those in need.

Last weekend was an eventful occasion, as Alexian Brothers across the US gathered at the Brothers’ residence in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Brother Thomas Keusenkothen.

Joined by Brother Tom’s siblings, the Brothers gave thanks for his life, vocation, and many years of faithful witness to the Alexian Charism. The community attended Mass in the chapel at Alexian Village, Tennessee, celebrating the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Brother Tom’s birthday.

Following Mass, the celebration continued with lunch, stories of his life, ministry, and family, and an Italian-style dinner.

May God continue to bless Brother Tom with many more years to come!
