Congregation of Alexian Brothers - Immaculate Conception Province

Congregation of Alexian Brothers - Immaculate Conception Province Religious Community of Men bound together by sacred apostolic vows & commitment to following Christ It is rooted in prayer and simple lifestyle.

The Alexian Charism is the prophetic and daring response of a faith community to the gospel of Jesus. In discipleship with Jesus, our response is reaching out to the poor, sick and dying, especially the marginated and the powerless. Our charism calls us to conversion and total self-giving in continuing the healing and reconciling mission of Jesus in collaboration with others.

Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Justin Martyr, a philosopher who found in Christ the answers to life's deepest questions. After converting to Christianity, he dedicated his life to defending the faith, even unto martyrdom in Rome around 165 AD.

His courage continues to inspire all Christians to live our faith with conviction and compassion.

How has your faith guided you through life's questions and challenges?

In the Milwaukee area, the Alexian Brothers continue their work, serving those in need and partnering with organizations that share our mission. The day starts with community joining together for morning prayer. During the day, Brothers are at work. Br. Richard has duties as community director while Brothers Terrance and Carl go out to minister. They work in partnership with Catholic Charities and James Place were they assist those on the margins and in need. At the end of the day the Brothers return to their community for evening prayer, giving thanks to God.

Are the Alexian Brothers Monks?
No.
Monks live in monasteries apart from the world, focused on prayer and contemplation.
The Alexian Brothers instead are a Catholic, lay, apostolic congregation of men who go out into the world and evangelize through our works. We take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. We live in community, pray together, and serve Christ in the poor, the marginalized, and the forgotten.
For more than 800 years, the Brothers have answered God’s call through humble service and faithful witness.
Ordinary men. Extraordinary lives.

What is a Charism?
For the Alexian Brothers, our Charism is seeking and finding Christ in the poor, the sick, the hungry, and those on the margins.
This gift from God shapes how we pray, how we live in community, and how we serve those most in need. As Brothers, we are called to live with compassion, humility, and faithful service, bringing the presence of Christ to those who are often forgotten.
Ordinary men. Extraordinary lives.

The Brothers have been out and about this spring in Chicago, serving those in need. The Alexian Brothers have been partnering with the Franciscans of the Eucharist of Chicago in delivering food through their Mission of Our Lady of the Angels. The work has not only provided physically for those in need, but also spiritually. Brothers are a comforting and welcome presence and have become well known in the community.

The Alexian Brothers are looking for ordinary men seeking to live an extraordinary life in Christ. If you are interested in joining the Order, contact [email protected].

The early Alexian Brothers came from a hard world.

Medieval Europe was marked by plague, poverty, war, and death. The Church was part of daily life. So were funerals, processions, fasting, penance, and prayer.

Out of that world came lay Catholic men who chose a different path. They were not priests. They were not nobles. They were not trying to be remembered.
Instead they lived a devout life in the imitation of Christ. Living simply, praying often, and giving themselves to the works of mercy.

They stayed near the sick. They prayed for the dying. They buried the dead.
That was their vocation, and it was a brave and daring response to the needs around them. This response continues today as the Alexian Brothers continue their 800+ year history of service.

Today is both the Feastday of St. Joesph the Worker and Religious Brothers Day. We pray today to St. Joesph to help all those who labor and work. Help all Brothers as we seek to live faithful and holy lives, putting to use our gifts, talents and time for the good of others.

We pray:
God our Father, Creator and Ruler of the universe, in every age you call man to develop and use his gift for the good of others. With St. Joesph as our example and guide, help us to do the work you have asked...and come to the rewards you have promised.

St. Joesph the Worker - pray for us.

On Religious Brothers Day, we give thanks for the vocation of Religious Brothers — men called to follow Christ through prayer, community, and service.

Religious brothers are not simply men who serve. They are consecrated men who give their lives to Christ and His Church.

Ordinary Men. Extraordinary Lives.
