During the month of February, we will be celebrating Black History Month to honor the contributions and achievements of Black people in our country. The idea for Black History Month was first formed by historian Carter G. Woodson and colleagues, who organized Negro History Week in February 1926. They selected February for the celebration because the month included the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Negro History Week was expanded to Black History Month in 1976, with President Gerald Ford urging Americans to participate in its observance.

To celebrate, each week we will present a brief history of a Black person who has contributed in unique ways. This week, we will learn more about Mardi Gras Indians: A Living Legacy of Resistance and Honor, presented by Jaimie Roberts-Duarte.

The Young Hero and The Horrible Giant

Scripture: (Common English Bible)

1 Samuel 17:43-47

The Philistine asked David, “Am I some sort of dog that you come at me with sticks?” And he cursed David by his gods. “Come here,” he said to David, “and I’ll feed your flesh to the wild birds and the wild animals!”

But David told the Philistine, “You are coming against me with sword, spear, and scimitar, but I come against you in the name of the Lord of heavenly forces, the God of Israel’s army, the one you’ve insulted. Today, the Lord will hand you over to me. I will strike you down and cut off your head! Today, I will feed your dead body and the dead bodies of the entire Philistine camp to the wild birds and the wild animals. Then the whole world will know that there is a God on Israel’s side. And all those gathered here will know that the Lord doesn’t save by means of sword and spear. The Lord owns this war, and he will hand all of you over to us.”

The Jesus Storybook Bible:
The Forgiving Prince

Scripture: (Common English Bible)

Genesis 45:4-8

Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me,” and they moved closer. He said, “I’m your brother Joseph! The one you sold to Egypt. Now, don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves that you sold me here. Actually, God sent me before you to save lives. We’ve already had two years of famine in the land, and there are five years left without planting or harvesting. God sent me before you to make sure you’d survive[a] and to rescue your lives in this amazing way. You didn’t send me here; it was God who made me a father to Pharaoh, master of his entire household, and ruler of the whole land of Egypt.

Genesis 50:15-21

When Joseph’s brothers realized that their father was now dead, they said, “What if Joseph bears a grudge against us, and wants to pay us back seriously for all of the terrible things we did to him?” So, they approached[a] Joseph and said, “Your father gave orders before he died, telling us, ‘This is what you should say to Joseph. “Please, forgive your brothers’ sins and misdeeds, for they did terrible things to you. Now, please forgive the sins of the servants of your father’s God.”’” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
His brothers wept[b] too, fell down in front of him, and said, “We’re here as your slaves.”
But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I God? You planned something bad for me, but God produced something good from it, in order to save the lives of many people, just as he’s doing today. Now, don’t be afraid. I will take care of you and your children.” So, he put them at ease and spoke reassuringly to them.
