War Memorial Hospital in Scottsville opened it's doors on July 2, 1952. It's has seen its fair share of prosperity, but even more despair.
During construction there was only one death noted. A construction worker was sent to the basement to move some pieces of wood when he was bitten by a copperhead snake. He passed away a few hours later. Perhaps he's still trying to complete the duties left undone from his past life. Maybe that's the culprit of the doors slamming and objects moving in the basement that have been reported by EMT's who used those rooms to sleep during their 24 hour shifts.
Past employees of the hospital have reported many experiences there. Some have talked about hearing a child say "hello" while standing near the nurses station. Others say they've periodically heard a baby crying, even after the maternity ward closed in 1994. Many nurses say the baby of an alcoholic mother passed away in one of those rooms. Apparently the baby had went without eating for days at home before being brought into the hospital. Is that the source of the heartbreaking cries heard by so many?
After the hospital moved to a new location the building was abandoned. Some of those who lived in the area then rented the building to use for a yearly haunted attraction. During preparation for opening the Haunted Hospital" several people experienced the crying baby.
One person working in what was formerly the CCU waiting room was startled when the door slammed shut. When they attempted to get out, they were unable to open the door. After a number of attempts to open the door were unsuccessful, they resorted to crawling out the window. They re-entered the building only to find the same door staying wide open.
People have complained of feeling trapped inside a room by an unseen entity, while others say they were touched by an invisible ice cold hand.
The last spirit who supposedly still stalks the halls of the old hospital is one of the doctors. It's said that after he was banned from the hospital he slowly went crazy. They say, after his death, he returned to the hospital to continue his rounds.

Liberty Hall, built around 1835 in Frankfort and owned by Senator John Brown. The grand home was passed down through Browns family. Perhaps some of them are still there.
One of those family members is Margaretta Varick. Margaretta was the aunt of Senator Browns wife. During the summer of 1817 Margaretta came to visit the Browns, but fell gravely ill shortly after her arrival. Unfortunately she didn't live through the night. Even though her visit was a short one, Margaretta must have loved the beautiful home, because some say she still lingers there today. There have been many sightings of her, but today she is known as the Grey Lady. She's been seen on the staircase, by the palladian window, and in the upstairs bedroom. Perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of her if you find the nerve to visit the grounds for a tour.
The specter of a British soldier might be seen wandering the grounds or may even peek in the window during your tour. Don't worry though, he's only looking for the woman he loved. It seems the soldier fell in love with one of the Senators cousins. She, however, did not feel the same. The soldier was heartbroken. He is rumored to peer in the window looking for his lost love and to wander away, crying, after not finding her.
The Grey Lady isn't the only female spirit that frequents Liberty Hall. The story goes that a famous opera singer went missing while at a party there in the early 1800's. Guests reported last seeing her strolling toward the river as she made her way through the lush gardens. Whether she drown or was abducted, no one knows, but she was never seen again... not on this side of the veil anyway. Now she's only seen as a dark haired apparition as she runs screaming through the gardens.

Night 2 of 31 brings you Sleepy Hollow Road near Prospect. Everyone loves a nice drive on a tree lined country road...unless, of course, it's haunted.
Such is the case with Sleepy Hollow Road. A magnet for young couples, this beautiful stretch of winding road looks romantic. Imagine sitting next to your significant other hand in hand with your favorite song playing. Then suddenly you look up in your rear view mirror and notice another car behind you. No big deal, right? They'll pass and you'll continue your drive. But, wait, you notice they're getting closer...and closer. This has to be one of your buddies just messing with you. Only the car doesn't slow down. It gets even closer, so you speed up and it gets closer still until you're speeding recklessly down this curvy two lane road. Then out of nowhere the car starts to pass, but instead pulls alongside you. You realize it's not just any car, but a black hearse with windows tinted black. Before you realize what's happening it starts to move over into your lane, forcing you off the road and to your death if not for that guardrail. There is a cemetery up ahead. Perhaps in another time the hearse traveled this same road.
Further down is Crybaby Bridge. The original has long sense been replaced with a more sturdy and reliable one. The stories surrounding the bridge remain the same. Many years ago this bridge was reportedly a way of for women who had babies that were unwanted for one reason or another. Some say these women would take these tiny, helpless little ones and drop them over the edge to drown in the cold water below. Legend has it that you can still hear the haunting cries of their victims and the wailing of the mothers mourning their wretched decision. If you plan to listen for the cries, make sure you have plenty of time. It's rumored that hours pass while feeling like mere minutes.
Some say from the late 60's throughout the 1980's there were Satanic rituals held in an area next to Sleepy Hollow Road, known as Devil's Point. If you're brave enough to explore this spot maybe you'll hear the chanting or the victims screams that have been reported for many years. Some even claim to have followed the screams only to happen upon figures dressed in black robes illuminated only by the light from the fire.

Spirits and specters often said to roam places they have an attachment to, be it one of love or one of pain and sadness. Being the sight of executions, murders, violence, and su***de, it's no wonder so many haunt the cells and corridors of Kentucky State Penitentiary.
Established in 1886 and still currently operating, the Kentucky State Penitentiary, otherwise known as the Castle on the Cumberland, has housed thousands of prisoners over the years. Some of which were guilty of petty crimes, while others were the worst of the worst.
Many people have reported paranormal experiences at the prison, including guards, prisoners, as well as visitors. Some have told stories of apparitions, strange shadows, disembodied screams, doors opening and closing on their own, strange orbs, unexplained footsteps, phantom touches, and the eerie feeling of being watched.
Former guards have reported seeing apparitions in unoccupied guard towers, having gates open when no one is there to open them, and seeing shadows lurking behind them as they make their rounds.
There are some who recount tales of a female apparition whose identity remains unknown. People have seen the phantom lady near death row and wandering the cemetery. She is often associated with feelings of extreme stories and desperation.
One of the most infamous prisoners was James Kelley Moss. He was sentenced to death in the 1960's for beating his father to death. Moss was the last man executed in Kentucky until 1997. On March 2,1962 he was electrocuted. Some say his spirit still roams the prison, specifically the cell in which he was kept.
Another death row ghost who has been seen by both guards and inmates is supposedly that of a former inmate named Red Snyder. He was reportedly a member of the A***n Brotherhood. Snyder was said to have had a violent temper. His involvement in the 1981 prison riot earned him a death sentence which was carried out in 1997. Some visitors have claimed to feel his presence, while others say they've actually heard his voice.
Prisoners don't seem to be the only ones who still continue to roam the halls of this place. Former executioner, Harold "Hanger" Smith, committed su***de there. It's said that Smith couldn't bare the guilt he held for all the lives he had participated in taking. Many claim to have seen his apparition. Smith is rumored to cause strange, unexplained noises.

Alright HOK followers! It's officially the first day of Halloween! We thought we'd try something a little different this year. We're going to do 31 spooky Kentucky ghost stories to celebrate Halloween! We'll be posting a new story every day from now through the 31st. If there are any that you'd like us to do comment them below or send us a message! We would love to hear from you. Check back everyday for a new haunting tale and feel free to like, share and invite your friends!
