Sunday's Gospel gave us one of the most direct things Jesus ever said about why he came:
"Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners." — Matthew 9:12–13
He said it at a dinner table full of tax collectors and people the religious establishment had written off. He sat down with them. Ate with them. And when questioned about it, he quoted Hosea — a prophet who had been saying the same thing for centuries.
God has always wanted our trust and love more than our performance. That's not a new idea in the Gospel. It's the whole arc of Scripture.
We call it grace: the movement of God toward us before we've done anything to deserve it. It's why we baptize infants. It's why we come to the table not because we've earned a seat, but because we've been invited.
