Inquiring minds may ask why does The Episcopal Church veil crosses in purple during Lent? The reason is to symbolize penitence, mourning, and the hidden glory of Christ, preparing us for the solemnity of Holy Week. Purple represents both royalty and suffering, marking a shift from festive, decorated spaces to a focus on Jesus's sacrifice and humility.

Key reasons for this tradition include:
Symbol of Penitence: The color purple reflects the reflective, sorrowful, and repentant nature of the Lenten season.
Shifting Focus: The veils hide the ornate, glorious crosses (often crux gemata or jeweled crosses) to help worshippers focus on the suffering of the Passion rather than the triumph of the resurrection prematurely.
Historical Significance: This, often called "Passiontide", has roots in medieval traditions of covering the altar or sacred images to create a sense of longing for Easter.
Symbol of Sin: The veiling represents how human sin obscures the vision of God's truth.

The veils are typically removed on Good Friday or during the Easter Vigil, signifying the end of the fast and the arrival of resurrection joy.
