Ruth 1:16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: 17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Ruth, the picture of total dedication, total submission to God’s will. Her and Naomi had lost everything, their husbands are dead, Orpah has returned to her family, and so Naomi pleads with Ruth to return to hers. But v14 states “but Ruth clave unto her”. Ruth was not going to abandon Naomi. All they had were each other and God, and that was enough. The Book of Ruth is truly a beautiful story of kinship and love, of God’s blessing thru what seems like hopelessness, even giving us a picture of the kinsman-redeemer, as Boaz is a type of Christ our Redeemer. Yet it all starts with v16-17, where Ruth pleads with Naomi not to send her away, but to allow her to be her traveling companion, her daughter-in-law, her friend. Ruth is an example for every believer in how dedicated we should be to the Lord. Ruth tells Naomi where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay; your people will be my people; your God my God; your final resting place my final resting place. And truly we believers should go where God leads, minister where God says minister, let His people be our people, submit and obey Him as we seek His will, and live our lives unto Him til we draw our last breath. Such determination to be a blessing and a pleasure to her mother-in-law; as followers of Christ our determination should match Ruth’s and more. We simply need to humble ourselves before Him and like Ruth say “I will…”
